China’s J‑36 Hype Meets America’s Secret NGAD Test Fleet

“For the past five years, the X-planes for this aircraft have been quietly laying the foundation for the F-47,” Gen. David Allvin said, describing a development path built less around public spectacle than sustained test work behind closed doors. That contrast explains much of the fascination around China’s J-36 and the United States’ Next Generation Air Dominance effort. The J-36 has become a highly visible symbol of momentum because its shape, revisions, and flight activity can be picked apart from open imagery. The American side has produced almost the opposite effect: fewer public glimpses, but stronger indications that multiple demonstrators have already been flying for years. For aerospace watchers, the real comparison is not simply aircraft against aircraft. It is transparency against secrecy, and prototype visibility against system-level maturity.

The J-36’s appeal is easy to understand. Images associated with the aircraft show a large tailless design with three engines, side-by-side seating, and a broad blended planform that points to long range, high internal volume, and a strong emphasis on signature control. Later views suggested the aircraft’s configuration was still evolving, including redesigned exhausts with two-dimensional thrust-vectoring petals and intake changes that appeared aimed at refining performance and packaging. Those changes do not diminish the program’s significance. They place it where ambitious combat-aircraft programs usually live for years: in the difficult space between first flight and settled design. That matters because public attention often treats visibility as proof of a lead.

The U.S. path to NGAD has been structured differently. Official material describes NGAD not as a single replacement for the F-22, but as a “family of systems” that combines a crewed fighter with uncrewed partners, advanced propulsion, sensors, and digital engineering. The F-47 sits at the center of that architecture, but it is not the whole architecture. DARPA later disclosed that Boeing and Lockheed Martin had already built two X-planes for NGAD risk reduction, and that those aircraft first flew in 2019 and 2022, accumulating several hundred flight hours each. That timeline suggests the American effort entered real flight experimentation well before the F-47 name became public, and well before outside observers had enough imagery to fuel the kind of design-forensics conversation now surrounding the J-36.

The strategic logic behind NGAD also reaches beyond one airframe. The Air Force says the F-47 is planned for a combat radius of more than 1,000 nautical miles, a major jump from the F-22’s commonly cited reach, and it has paired that goal with collaborative aircraft intended to expand sensing, weapons carriage, and mission flexibility. In early 2025, the service formally designated two prototype drone wingmen, the YFQ-42A and YFQ-44A, underscoring that the future air-superiority model is increasingly about crewed-uncrewed teaming rather than a solitary fighter performing every task alone.

Seen from that angle, the J-36 story and the NGAD story are not mirror images. China’s aircraft demonstrates how much can be inferred when a prototype develops in public view, with each test article exposing new engineering decisions. America’s effort shows how much progress can accumulate when prototypes remain largely hidden and the public only sees the program after years of risk reduction. The louder program is not automatically the one furthest ahead. In advanced aircraft development, the timeline often belongs to the fleet that has already been flying in secret.
