J-36 Hype Meets America’s Secret NGAD X-Plane Test Fleet

What matters more in advanced fighter development: the aircraft everyone can see, or the one almost nobody can? That question sits at the center of the excitement around China’s J-36 and the quieter reality behind America’s Next Generation Air Dominance effort. Fresh imagery of a second J-36 prototype with major visible changes has fueled claims that China is sprinting toward an operational sixth-generation combat jet. The new airframe does show notable momentum. It also shows something else: a design still moving through serious iteration, not a frozen production standard.

The visible changes are substantial. The revised J-36 appears to swap its earlier recessed exhaust treatment for angular nozzles that resemble two-dimensional thrust-vectoring arrangements, while its lower inlets also seem to have shifted toward a diverterless supersonic intake layout. Even the main landing gear has been reworked into a different wheel arrangement, a reminder that weight, packaging, stability, and maintainability questions are still being actively answered. That is not a sign of failure. It is evidence of a program still learning in public.

America’s NGAD story has unfolded in the opposite way. The Air Force disclosed back in 2020 that a full-scale NGAD flight demonstrator had already flown, with Will Roper saying it had “broken a lot of records.” Years later, a broader outline has become public: NGAD matured as a family of systems rather than a single aircraft, and that architecture now centers on the F-47 plus collaborative drones. Congress’s research summary notes that the program is intended to replace the F-22 with a longer-range, more survivable platform inside an NGAD family of systems that includes uncrewed teammates.

That distinction is easy to miss in visual comparisons. The J-36 is being judged from smartphone footage and telephoto images, where inlet geometry, nozzle shape, and planform cues become the story. NGAD has largely denied that kind of open-source anatomy lesson. Instead, the U.S. approach has leaned on digital engineering, classified prototyping, and multiple X-plane-style demonstrators to reduce risk before the public sees much of anything. Aviation Week traced that path back to DARPA’s Aerospace Innovation Initiative, which aimed to develop and fly two X-plane prototypes for future air dominance technologies. In other words, the American test fleet appears to have been doing its work long before the branding caught up.

Range and teaming help explain why. Public Air Force material says the F-47 is planned for a combat radius of more than 1,000 nautical miles, well beyond the F-22’s commonly cited reach, while CCAs are being shaped to extend sensor coverage, add weapons, perform jamming, and absorb risk. The Air Force has already assigned prototype designations to several drone wingmen, including Northrop Grumman’s YFQ-48A Talon as a CCA contender. That makes the real comparison less about one tailless jet versus another and more about which industrial system can field a workable combat ecosystem faster.

The J-36 remains important because it demonstrates just how rapidly China is refining advanced combat-aircraft concepts. But the strongest lesson from the current hype cycle is simpler: a visible prototype can dominate attention, while a hidden test fleet can dominate the timeline.
