A Veteran Pilot Thinks Google Earth Revealed Amelia Earhart’s Plane

Could a few overlooked shapes on a remote Pacific reef bring one of aviation’s oldest mysteries back into focus? That question has followed pilot Justin Myers ever since he began scanning satellite imagery of Nikumaroro, the coral atoll long associated with theories about Amelia Earhart’s final landing. Myers was not a career Earhart researcher. By his own account, curiosity took hold after a documentary, and then his instincts as a flier took over. Looking at the island from above, he tried to imagine where a crew flying low on fuel might attempt to put down a light twin-engine aircraft. What caught his eye was not a dramatic wreck site, but a set of straight, oddly proportioned forms that seemed out of place against reef and sand.

His attention centered on one detail: a dark linear object that measured about 39 feet, closely matching the length of Earhart’s Lockheed Electra 10E. Myers also believed he could make out other components, including what looked like part of an engine, exposed briefly by changing weather and shifting sand. “It looked man-made,” he said, describing the moment when a casual search began to feel like a technical exercise in aircraft recognition rather than treasure hunting.

Nikumaroro has held that kind of magnetic pull for decades. The island lies about 400 miles southeast of Howland Island, Earhart and navigator Fred Noonan’s intended refueling stop in 1937, and it has long sat at the center of the so-called castaway hypothesis. Over the years, investigators working on the island have pointed to fragments and traces that they argue fit a stranded-aircraft scenario, from altered materials to possible campsite evidence. The modern search has only expanded that attention, especially after researchers identified the lagoon feature now called the Taraia Object, visible in photos dating back to 1938.

That larger context explains why Myers’ find has not automatically triggered a rush to excavation. Earhart searches have repeatedly been shaped by compelling images that later dissolved under closer inspection. In 2024, a deep-sea sonar target was presented as bearing the contours of the missing Electra, only to be dismissed after a return visit found an ordinary rock formation. The caution runs deeper than embarrassment. Every new claim enters a crowded field of rival interpretations, expensive logistics, and the persistent problem of proving that a shape is an artifact before a ship, permit, and full field team are ever mobilized.

Even so, the broader effort around Nikumaroro has become more organized. Purdue University and its partners prepared an expedition to inspect the Taraia Object with imaging, sonar, and magnetometers, but the trip was postponed until 2026 because of permitting and seasonal weather concerns. That delay leaves Myers’ reefside anomaly in an unusual position: still unverified, still visible in his measurements, and still outside the main institutional search track.

There is one reason the mystery continues to resist closure. The historical record keeps widening even as the physical evidence remains elusive. In 2026, the U.S. National Archives released 4,624 pages tied to Earhart’s disappearance, including logs, maps, and search material from 1937. The documents deepen the archival picture, but they do not settle the location of the aircraft.

Myers has drawn a narrower conclusion. He has said he cannot prove the object is Earhart’s Electra, only that it appears to be the remains of a 12-meter, two-engine vintage aircraft. On Nikumaroro, that distinction is everything: not a solved legend, but a visible shape waiting for someone to walk out across the reef and test what the satellite saw.
