What happens when a fighter no longer goes to work alone? The answer is beginning to reshape the logic of air combat. “Loyal wingman” drones, now formalized in U.S. Air Force terminology as Collaborative Combat Aircraft, are shifting from concept art and simulation into a new category of combat aviation: uncrewed aircraft designed not as stand-alone replacements for fighters, but as extensions of them. In that model, the pilot stops being the single point of sensing, striking, and surviving, and becomes a mission commander for a small airborne team.

The scale alone explains why the idea matters. The U.S. Air Force has discussed planning concepts involving roughly 1,000 CCAs, built around teaming two drones with each of 200 NGAD platforms and 300 F-35s. That is less a procurement slogan than a sign that force structure is being reconsidered around human-machine formations rather than individual jets. Instead of asking how one fighter penetrates defended airspace, planners can ask how a crewed aircraft and several linked uncrewed aircraft divide sensing, jamming, decoy work, weapons carriage, and risk.
The U.S. Air Force has already put names to that shift. In March 2025, the U.S. Air Force assigned the designations YFQ-42A and YFQ-44A to its first two prototype aircraft. David Allvin said, “For the first time in our history, we have a fighter designation in the YFQ-42A and YFQ-44A.” That detail is more than bureaucratic housekeeping. It places uncrewed aircraft inside the fighter ecosystem rather than beside it, with implications for doctrine, training, basing, and command relationships.
Testing is now moving past abstract autonomy talk and into practical integration work. The Air Force’s first CCA prototypes have begun captive carry evaluations using inert test munitions, a step aimed at validating airworthiness, structural behavior, and safe systems performance before any live weapons employment. That matters because the loyal wingman concept only changes strategy if these aircraft can reliably carry useful payloads while remaining controllable inside a fast-moving tactical picture.
The strategic value lies in role separation. Secretary Frank Kendall once described CCAs as remotely controlled versions of pods or stores that fighters already carry, but with far more freedom in where they can go and what they can do. A wingman drone can push ahead as a sensor, hang back as a communications relay, soak up enemy attention as a decoy, or carry extra missiles without burdening the crewed jet. In effect, the traditional fighter loadout is being externalized into maneuvering aircraft with their own autonomy, which changes not just magazine depth but geometry. Firepower, sensing, and survivability can be distributed across a formation instead of concentrated in one expensive cockpit.That approach does not eliminate the human pilot. It elevates the pilot into a mission-command role.
The core challenge is not only building autonomous aircraft, but building trust, interface design, and command logic that let one pilot supervise multiple aircraft without becoming saturated. This has been part of the concept from the start of manned-unmanned teaming, where autonomy reduces direct stick-and-rudder control demands and shifts the operator into a supervisory role. The wider trend is global, but not uniform. Australia’s Boeing MQ-28 Ghost Bat, Europe’s wingman concepts, and China’s mix of smaller support drones and larger fighter-like uncrewed aircraft show that the loyal wingman label now covers several different design philosophies. Some emphasize affordable mass and close collaboration with crewed fighters. Others lean toward more independent, higher-performance uncrewed combat aircraft. That divergence suggests the real revolution is not one airplane, but a new tactical grammar in which crewed and uncrewed aircraft share the same fight in different proportions.
