Some 1,600 flight-test sorties with no crash is the sort of number that will make a prototype a program with momentum and also the reason why 2026 is becoming the true start of the KF-21 Boramae and not its end.

Over decades, the Republic of Korea Air Force (ROKAF) modernized, mostly relying on the imported American designs, starting with the remnants of the Cold War, up to the modern era of stealths. That strategy formed a competent force, but it also exposed South Korea to reliance on foreign supply chains, integration assurances and upgrade timetables. The most obvious indicator that the fighter inventory of the country is being rebalanced to a domestic base-without an attempt to recreate all the parts simultaneously is the KF-21.
The Boramae, a plane of Korea Aerospace Industries in Sacheon, was designed as a “middle path” aircraft, more survivable and technologically advanced than traditional fourth-generation jets, but designed with fifth-generation characteristics in mind since its inception, that can be installed as the various blocks continue development. The service version is Block I that is primarily an air-to-air version, and the subsequent service versions branch out to include strike and reconnaissance. It is not an afterthought, but a formal model of spiral-development which seizes training, sustenance and tactics hard in an operational fleet as the design becomes its entire multirole potential.
At the beginning of January 2026, South Korea declared that the KF-21 was completed after its flight-test program involving approximately 1,600 sorties over approximately 42 months, having demonstrated approximately 13,000 test conditions. The program was terminated two months in advance by decentralizing the test activity to additional areas and aerial refueling extended the flight time of jets and piled evaluations into fewer beamfits. Six flying prototypes, two of which were twin-seat, and ground-test articles gave the capacity to probe edge-of-envelope handling, weapons events, and vehicle recovery of extreme attitude before the first production aircrafts are provided.
What comes first is not an uncompromised stealth fighter. Block I has weapons mounted on the outside and supported by shaping decisions that minimise signaturean S-duct intake, flush antennas, and an otherwise low-observable profile, but lacking the signature characteristic of what many would call “stealth”: internal weapons carry. That step will be in the roadmap of later variants, which may frequently be referred to as KF-21EX or Block III, with more sensor fusion and a heavier low-observable treatment. The growth margins and the twin-engine design of the aircraft, with the two GE F414-type turbofans, are the key to that long-term plan.
The KF-21 work is occurring behind the radome on some of the most important work. The aircraft is flown on an AESA radar developed domestically and flight tests showed that the platform was capable of relocating the events of “safe separation” to more realistic systems integration. In a 2024 testing sequence of weaponry, the radar identified and monitored an unmanned aerial target at 87 km as the aircraft tested successful firing trials involving Meteor and IRIS-T-class missiles an early indicator that the sensor/weapon handshake is developing as a front line fighter requires.
The production planning is also an indicator not of experimentation but of intent. South Korea has ordered 40 Block I aircraft, the first of which will be delivered in the second half of 2026, and the long-range force structure will reach 120 KF-21s by the early 2030s. The older jets are also there to replace the oldest fighters in the ROKAF inventory, which long ago reached a point in their usefulness as far as meaningful modernization is possible, with the remainder of the fleet (KF-16s and F-15Ks) following their own modernization roads.
The important engineering narrative is that the KF-21 is deployed as a platform and not a one-off complete configuration. The headline in the Boramae in 2026 is not a single sensor, not a single missile, but the transformation of an innovative potential to a regime of operation that will be capable of assimilating new arms, functions, and low-observability modifications at a pace with which South Korea sets its own time.
