Who’s laughing now? China’s humanoid robots just turned stumbles into flips

A year ago, the humanoid robots in China were punchlines on the internet: clunky, jointless and subject to the sort of social embarrassment that causes a technology to appear even more distant than it is. This winter the same type of machines landed aerial flips, struck coordinated choreography and seemed at ease performing it on a stage created in relation to human timing and human anticipations.

The move was performed in front of as many people as possible. During the 2026 Spring Festival Gala, commonly known as the most-watched TV show in the world, humanoids of various startups kung fu, dance, and + gymnastics-type performances. The difference between the appearance of the previous year could be described as wobbly folk-dance, and the response on the internet was between fascination and terror as to what the bodies that are more capable of doing beyond the stage.

Those who monitor the industry claim that the spectacle is not as important as what it demonstrates concerning engineering advances. First Reyk Knuhtsen of SemiAnalysis claimed that “people should be taking these robots very seriously” but that after this spring gala demonstration, they are becoming noticeably lean and fluid and able. He further cautioned that a highlight reel will not be the final judge of the winner in the long-run: [T]he winner of the AI model race will not be judged by a highlight reel: the robot will only be as useful as its model after all.

It is not the ability of its robots, but rather the speed with which companies can create and upgrade them that is an advantage that it has given China. In 2025, Barclays estimates a total of about 15,000 installations of humanoid robots, with over 85 being in China compared to 13 in the U.S., Zornitsa Todorova, Head of Thematic FICC Research at Barclays said,The benefit that China has is that it has a vertically integrated robotics value chain: the rare earths and high-performance magnets, the physical components, and the batteries. Such an end-to-end control is also likely to shorten the development cycles as teams are allowed to repair a bad joint, replace a sensor, or re-balance the bill of materials without holding back a broken supply base.

It was also at the gala routine that I could get some hints of what, specifically, is transforming in these machines. Unitree had not only alleged aerial flip launching of up to 10 feet (3 meters) and synchronized parkour-style movement but also used refined hands, upgraded motors, better sensing and control. Engineers explained a Cluster-control that was developed to coordinate dozens of robots at milliseconds timing precision, and lidar-based localization to be more certain on stage with positioning. Although the engineering direction is obvious even in entertainment, it is in the tightening of the integration of perception, planning, and actuation into real time, on the scale of many bodies simultaneously. None of that is usefulness in the locations that are economically important.

Omdia chief analyst Lian Jye Su cited the “improvement in dexterity” in flips and prop handling as an indicator of the tasks that demand the use of delicate tools and a fine, controlled motion, and said that robots still must show themselves to be reliable in unstructured, human-centric settings, such as in healthcare or domestic service. The name of that gap in the robotics community is generalization. The difference between choreography and reality, as mentioned in Communications of the ACM, can be characterized as the “generalization bottleneck”, at which lighting, clutters and unforeseen human actions can transform a sure demo into unknown disaster. Also mentioned in the article is the fact that the current methods of “Vision-Language-Action” strive to connect high-level reasoning with motion, yet they remain to be validated in conditions of uncertainty and safe failures.

Humanoids in 2026 are inevitable according to Stagecraft. The engineering challenge is: Can the same systems be strung up with longer chains of tasks, gracefully recover when plans fail, and work hours in an untidy room without transforming all the environments into rehearsals?
