China’s Type 004 Carrier Push Forces a Hard Look at the Air Wing and the Defenses

Defense is not an equipment problem, it is a system problem“. This is the same line employed to justify how U.S. carrier strike groups are surviving in a missile age and it is also the question that is of greatest importance with the Chinese leap out of its ski-jump era into catapult carriers: an increased deck does not necessarily mean credible projection of power.

The third carrier of China is the Type 003 Fujian which is still in the final stages of sea trials and a visible departure of its predecessors. Its flat-top deck and electromagnetic catapults are supposed to enable it to achieve higher sortie rates, greater takeoff weights and the capability to support a carrier air wing that no longer appears like a regional boast and could be more of a sustained campaign aircraft. That is critical because the operational worth of a carrier is established not only by its capacity to launch, recover, rearm and coordinate but also by its capacity to park as many aircrafts.

Electromagnetic catapults are in the middle of the Fujian story. The other countries that use this technology at sea are China, and the other state-linked media has reported catapult assisted-take-offs and arrested landings using J-15T, the stealthy J-35, and KJ-600 airborne early-warning planes. On the surface, those trials imply a slowly emerging air wing that is beginning to take shape, fighters and an organic node that can be considered an “eyewitness-in-the-sky” meant to project detection distances far beyond the radar picture of the shipboard radar.

Nevertheless, early catapult ability does not negate the engineering and deck-handling facts which determine whether a carrier can produce combat power on demand. One such circulating analysis in open sources attributes the deck-layout limitations to the traditional propulsion of the Fujian as well as the location of the islands, (such as a catapult which is capable of disrupting the work of recovery operations) and another that is close to an aircraft lift, so routine spotting is reduced to a bottleneck. Not cosmetic issues those. They are directly converted into cycle times, deck congestion, and sortie generation under stress where, in fact, either a carrier gains the ability to be a tempo machine or a sluggish liability.

The fact that friction is aggravated when combined with the next step that China takes: the Type 004, makes it even more consequential. Existing evaluations resting on imagery that is available commercially depict a hull that was bigger, allegedly directed at four catapults and an air force that was estimated at 100 or more planes. The headline figure is a catchy one, but the meaning behind it lies in another place: to maintain a 100-aircraft deck, it has to have reliable launch-and-recovery equipment, elevators with huge throughput, and weapons handling, as well as command-and-control software capable of maintaining the outer defensive ring coherent as packages of strikes cycle.

The U.S. carrier model will provide a convenient yardstick in this case since it considers the concepts of protection and offense as inseparable. During a strike group in the modern day, the threats are detected by airborne early warning aircraft at a distance, the fighters get the defensive perimeter pushed back, and escorts establish a layer of missile defense to thin the inbound salvos before it ever gets to point defence. The carrier does not just exist as a single duelist, but is the hub of a distributed structure constructed around a sensors and coordination and the depth of magazines. This argument will also be extended to the carriers of China as they transition off demonstration deploys and into contested operations, particularly as the threat transitions to include missiles that fly alongside seawater, sub-sea threats, and cheap drones that strain the inventories of interceptors.

The construction rate and the depth of industries in China is the strategic newspaper, yet the engineering narrative is briefer and more disclosing. It is not only the construction of a “supercarrier” of the Fujian and the projected Type 004. They are concerning demonstrating that catapult dependability, deck dance, and a built in air wing can be regularized day after day-at the rate at which it must count in the Pacific.
