USS Nimitz Keeps Sailing Because Replacements Take Years, Not Headlines

Two nuclear reactors can keep a supercarrier in motion decades, whereas it will take almost 12 years to replace such a ship. The incompatibility of endurance and the pace of industry lies at the heart of why USS Nimitz (CVN-68) remains an engineering fact, rather than a name on a deployment list.

Nimitz, which had been commissioned on May 3, 1975 and constructed at Newport News, is the oldest aircraft carrier in the entire world. The simple fact about its size, the simple fact that it loaded weighed approximately 100,000 tons and that the length measured 1,092 feet, is the easy part of the headline, but what is more telling is the extent to which it can perform combat duty that the Navy is still learning to handle on an end-to-end basis. The A4W propulsion plant in the ship was constructed to be durable and the design has had decades of modernization without the need to completely redesign the hull. That resilience is now coming into a conflict with another type of constraint: maintenance windows, dry docks and the physics of nuclear work scheduling.

There is also an unusual distinction within Nimitz. It is the only ship which has as its official title merely the surname “Nimitz” rather than a complete presidential name. Crewmen and fans continue to lean on the nickname of “Uncle Chester” a short name that fits the legacy of command of World War II of Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz into a platform that survived the Cold War and continued onward.

What follows the carrier is also becoming of growing importance in its relevance. The carrier leadership of the Navy has openly addressed stretching early lives of the Nimitz-classes of service in addition to considering the reality of refueling and sophisticated overhaids, docking capacity, and the entire manning impact of the fleet. The tension was well encapsulated in a single line by Rear Adm. James Downey, the carrier program executive officer of the service: “So we’re looking at where that capability sits from a timeframe perspective. It’s — generally the math takes you to the 52 or 55 years.” The considerations of the Navy depend upon the intersection of modernization, the life of nuclear plants and capacity of shipyards, since there is never a single hull which is to be extended. When Downey said “These ships don’t go by themselves,” he meant the impacts it has on the escorts, the sailors and the force at large.

The same industrial math is present on the replacement side. The USS John F. Kennedy (CVN-79) is built to support EMALS, Advanced Arresting Gear, advanced weapons elevators to stimulate sortie generation and reduce manning, however, those integrated systems bring schedule risk when certification and redesign accumulate. Delivery slipping of Kennedy into 2027 has been tracked in its planning documents, providing an opportunity of a narrower carrier inventory window in the event Nimitz departs the service on its present schedule. The technical aspect of it is that the new systems are not optional: it is that the process of shipbuilding now has the complexity of software integration within a steel hull.

Nor is the off-ramp of retiring a nuclear carrier. The Navy has demonstrated that its first nuclear-powered carrier Enterprise (CVN-65) has become its own multi-year infrastructure issue: as one that vies to gain the same limited dock space as the active ships to maintain readiness. Public planning has been characterized as one that cuts across multiple years and this is where the Navy has shifted to bring about commercial industry so that it would not overload the public yards and rather create a repetitive procedure of what would happen in future carrier disposals. The things learned there will cast their dark shadow over the eventual inactivation of Nimitz as will any other deployment.

The pop culture did not construct the ship, however, it contributed to the solidifying of the myth. The Final Countdown was a movie made on Nimitz that was inclined to give in to the spectacle of modern naval aviation to narrate an impossible story. Engineering wise, the true version is more basic and difficult: a carrier can be carried to stay viable longer than a nation can reliably build, test, certify and field its replacement within the same schedule. It is that disconnect that causes “Uncle Chester” to be more of a moving museum piece.
