The F-47’s Real Advantage Isn’t Speed It’s Running Uncrewed Wingmen at the Edge

In a similar vein, a former Air Force Chief Scientist by the name of Dr. Gregory Zacharias once wrote of how a fighter pilot would be controlling a swarm of uncrewed aircraft directly through the cockpit in the near future. That assumption is currently at the core of the F-47 idea of the Air Force: a crewed stealth plane that regards autonomous teammates as part of its own sensors, weapons and survivability.

The thought process behind the concept is not the airframe but is more the architecture. The F-47 is constructed in the “family of systems” approach as a fast and survivable command-and-control node that guides a number of Collaborative Combat Aircraft (CCA) on-in-flight-directing mission roles without reliance on a ground operations center-oriented routes and sensor-gathering schemes. Properly done that provides a practical benefit: it has a reduced latency between detection, decision and action, since control and data exchange remains at the tactical edge.

The CCA initiative in the Air Force has changed the slide decks to hardware within a short period of time. In 2025 General Atomics began the flight testing of two Increment 1 prototypes, the YFQ-42A and the YFQ-44A, and the program is directly focused on operational learning, rather than technology demonstrations. The two designs are undergoing developmental testing in California as tactics and work flows between humans and machines are tested in an Experimental Operations Unit at Nellis Air Force Base. The idea is simple enough: shift the pilot-vehicle interface, autonomy behavior and mission roles away, so that when production is started, the subsequent “quarterback” relationship is not created in post-production.

It is also that friendship that makes the wingmen of the F-47 loyal to him not be portrayed as an add-on with a singular purpose. CCAs are characterized as big, jet-powered uncrewed aircraft that could possibly carry packages that are air-to-air, air-to-ground, electronic warfare, targets, and intelligence collection. The incremental structure of the program will indicate that breadth. Increment 1 has been presented as prioritizing air-to-air ability with the capability to carry weapons, but subsequent increments can adjust the composition towards sensors or electronic attack or any other function as the force discovers what it can credibly command effectively under pressure.

The strategic pull is explained with the help of numbers. An Air Force objective of 1,000 CCAs has been debated and in a concept model, two CCAs with every of about 500 advanced crewed fighters. The money and the points of oversight friction have also been monitored by Congress: the Air Force has identified funding of $804.4 million to CCA in the mandatory and discretionary lines in combination in FY2026, and legislators have demanded disambiguation on the mission sets, interfaces, and test duplication, not to mention the less glamorous problem of maintaining hundreds of large uncrewed aircraft as large.

These questions of logistics and autonomy cannot be separated. Being a “loyal wingman” implies being close to the threat which is likely to induce the need to survive, build up strong networking and independence that cannot disintegrate even in jamming, cyber-stress, or bad guidance. The long-term value of the program will lie in the demonstration that human beings can establish goals and limitations and machines do them with a high level of reliability, without turning every uncrewed jet into a boutique aircraft that contradicts the entire “affordable mass” argument.

Considering that, the most significant aspect of the F-47 is that it allows maintaining decision loops forward, within the formation. In the event that the cockpit could manage to effectively manage more than one uncrewed platform as a coherent team: decoys, sensors, jammers, shooters et cetera, the Air Force will have more than additional tails on the ramp. It achieves a depth scalable allocation of risk and strength throughout a formation without causing each movement to rely on one gorgeous airplane.
