Marine squads get a 20-kilometer “backpack strike” option with Bolt‑M

What is different when an infantry squad will be able to see beyond the next ridgeline, a target, and still achieves a precision effect without the need to wait until higher-echelon fires have been initiated?

This is the question behind the Organic Precision Fires-Light (OPF-L) effort of the Marine Corps: to expand the first-minutes-of-contact capabilities of a commander by a man-portable loitering munition that can be carried, fired, and used by non-specialist operators. The program office has also explained the acquisition strategy as “learn fast, field faster,” where Major Jesse Hume has explained, “Speed and acceptance of risk have always been the drivers behind this effort.”

In the real world, OPF-L is being designed like a competitive lane, as opposed to a single-vendor bet. Marines Corps has taken steps to pursue various systems that are intended to be used with complementary purposes to each other in various target sets and styles of employment, such as the Bolt-M system of Anduril, Rogue 1 of Teledyne FLIR, and Switchblade 300 Block 20 of AeroVironment. The Corps has said that more than 600 Rogue 1 loitering munition systems are all included in OPF-L fielding packages which incorporate control stations and training kits-indications that the service is establishing a platoon and below precision-fires toolbox, not a one-off device.

The eye-catching fact about Bolt-M is the physical form: a vertical takeoff and landing quadcopter that would be useful in the environment of dismounted infantry and littoral operations. It is said to be packable and can be airborne within less than five minutes, having a range of about 40+ minutes and a range within 20 km range. VTOL is important in that it eliminates the need to rely on rails, catapults, or open launch lanes- to allow launching into broken terrain, urban cover and limited deck space with which small Marine units tend to operate.

The class of the payload is also central. Bolt-M is reported to be capable of transporting up to three-pound munition with interchangeable targets that are set to attack personnel and materiel. That weight bracket does not make a squad an artillery battery it makes a precision weapon against exposed fighters, fighting positions, and trench lines, as well as against knocking out light vehicles and nodes of gear that are fragile like sensors and communications enablers. This operational difference is time and certainty: loitering munitions provide the operator with time to verify what the target is actually, and then to commit to an approach geometry of their choice, as opposed to hastefully engaging a target because of incomplete identification.

The software approach of Anduril is shown to be the facilitator of such a workflow. Bolt-M is attached to the Lattice autonomy stack of the company, and the functions are defined as autonomous waypoint navigation, Target-agnostic object tracking and operator-chosen standoff distances and attack angles. A touchscreen-based control system, in which the operator decides the target and desired parameters of the terminal onboard autonomy does much of the remaining profile, is developed to ease the cognitive load upon an operator who must be moving, communicating, and surviving contact simultaneously.

Survivability of the electronic fight is becoming the difference maker when it comes to small UAS and loitering munitions, and the idea behind Bolt-M is based on onboard processing and autonomy to act as a useful tool when links are impaired. It is also explained to give a pro-abort-and-take-back policy and to include an electronic safe-and-arm device- specificallys, which is significant when munitions are continuously handled in vehicles, small boats and on land.

The unit feedback is the near-term proving ground of OPF-L. The Marine Corps has indicated that two infantry battalions will be equipped with OPF-L in early 2026 in order to train and test units and lessons would guide future increments, such as warheads and navigation/targeting enhancements. Meanwhile, industrial throughput is being handled in its capabilities form: Anduril has reported that it has increased its production capacity to over 100 all-up rounds per month, which would be decisive in case OPF-L transitions into the mainstream infantry production.
