America’s Carrier Air Wings Need F/A-XX Range to Stay Relevant Offshore

How far will the airliners of a carrier go before the carrier itself becomes the target? This is the query at the heart of the F/A-XX sixth-generation fighter initiative by the U.S. Navy, an aircraft that, among other things, will substitute the F/A-18E/F Super Hornet and ultimately take a larger portion of the carrier air wing penetrating attack and air defense role. The significance of the program has ceased to be a veil within budgetary documents: appropriators increased $74 million of FY2026 research-and-development funding to $972 million, and language urging the Navy to drive as fast as it can towards an engineering and manufacturing development contract award.

This is a bigger influx than congressional interest in a new jet. It is a recognition that the conventional operating geometry of carrier aviation is being challenged by long-range anti-ship weapons, in particular, the DF-21D and DF-26B missile family of the Chinese, which is sometimes referred to as “carrier destroyer”, with a range of up to 2,150km and up to 4,000km. The operational implication The plain truth is that a carrier strike group has to remain further out, it must have an air wing capable of getting in, surviving, and creating effects without decomposing itself in tanking needs and weak schedules. The F/A-XX, in that context, is not a substitute to the aging metal; it is the key that holding the flight deck together so as to enable it to become a costly means of deploying yesterday tactics.

The language used in the Navy highlights the trade. According to the planned reach that is planned to be achieved by the F/A-XX, Rear Adm. Michael “Buzz” Donnelly the head of the Air Warfare Division in the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations explained it as follows: “F/A-XX will offer probably over 125 percent of the range that we’re seeing today to give us better flexibility operational reach.” When queried as to whether that represented “25 percent more capacity before you start adding in refueling,” he said, “yeah, affirm[itive].” With the so-called combat radius of roughly 670 nautical miles of the F-35C, that would be an F/A-XX range of some 837.5 nautical miles, excluding tanking.

It is a nice addition, but not a magic wand. Here is where the wider carrier air wing ecosystem is of as much concern as the fighter. The MQ-25 Stingray is being constructed to support the idea of organic, carrier-based aerial refueling, which is an enabling capability that offloads tanking burden on the strike fighters and increases the ability of the Navy to place the deck in relation to threat rings. Meanwhile, F/A-XX is being positioned as a “quarterback” platform of unmanned aircraft, which is in line with the Navy pushing towards collaborative combat aircraft and a future air wing with an uncrewed portion that is much larger.

The recent Navy demonstrations indicate that the enabling technologies are not stored in anticipation of a remote fielding date, but are currently being practiced. Two BQM-177A autonomous air vehicles flying an Hivemind software controlled environment at Point Mugu were assigned the task of defending combat air patrol stations with an imaginary F/A-18 becoming the mission lead. Meanwhile, a related Navy simulation research has involved pilots handling a number of co-operating aircraft at once during the rehearsal of complex missions- a precursor of how cockpit workload, interfaces and tactics might change as a manned fighter is anticipated to control a small group of semi-autonomous wingmen.

The other pressure point contributing to the current impatience of the congress is execution, and it is not addressed by range, survivability, or manned-unmanned integration. Appropriators have indicated clearly that the FY2026 funding to be used should be awarded a single vendor EMD contract and the Navy should give an updated acquisition strategy and schedule with dates on development and fielding. As Boeing and Northrop Grumman are the likely competitors, there is a less-escaping uncertainty as to whether the Navy desires the aircraft, and is more about whether the industrial base can take another sixth-generation construction plan without making the next air wing of the carrier a paper-architecture.

In the short run, carrier aviation is capable of operating without F/A-XX. The greater danger, in the long run, is that the carrier will have a conditional relevance the relevance of the carrier will be conditioned on the restraint of the adversary as opposed to the capability of the air wing to arrive, remain and fight within the protected space.
