The Marines Cut Their Tanks Now Mobility Carries the Risk

The Marine Corps had over 450 tanks before Force Design, and then they determined that they did not need them. That decision alone would be the short shorthand critique of the most ambitious re-invention in Corps history: of returning to being a naval expeditionary force designed to engage in dispersed, ocean operations in the Indo-Pacific, and not a land-based attack force optimised through 20 years of counterinsurgency. It is a tank story that is visible, emotional, and arguable, which makes the story interesting. What had taken its place was the more difficult: a theory of persistence in the littorals which lives or dies on maintainance and movement, rather than the mass of armour.

The very framing of Indo-Pacific by the Marine Corps is broad based on purpose. U.S. Indo-Pacific Command identifies the 38 nations that make up the Asia-Pacific region as covering 52 percent of the surface of the earth, a size that makes any tactical thought a logistics challenge. The Force Design accepts this fact by moving to small formations, closer Navy integration, and sensing and targeting through maritime contested space. It is also content with the idea that dispersed units will be punished when they become predictable – on the electromagnetic spectrum, on their resupply routes, or basing patterns.

This is the reason why the most significant phrases in the latest updates are neither about missiles nor drones; it is about bullets, bandages, and beans. The operational tax of stand-in forces is the transportation of those necessities under monitoring. Mark Cancian put the driver straight to the point: Vulnerability, the necessity of escorts in the context of a challenged logistics this is what is driving the United States.

The details of force design have already forced into implementation which indicate the location of the friction. The Corps has decided to go back to the 13-Marine rifle squad and added to this, some added precision fires Marine, which is a small change to make, but one that points to a much bigger fact distributed units must have organic means to locate targets, to defend themselves, and to hold on until help arrives. More seniorly, Marine Littoral Regiments are designed with sea-denial functions and logistics and air-defense capabilities inherent in them, and have an MLR of about 1,800 to 2,000 Marines and sailors.

The question of mobility has, however, become the place where the tank debate has moved silent. Tanks did not only represent firepower, but guaranteed ground mobility and some type of battlefield mind-reading ability. That role in the island chains is that which connectors and small ships are expected to play, that is, transport forces between shore and shore without creating an indication of a regular routine. The Medium Landing Ship is the central point of that concept, and even the analysis given by the service itself said that nine LSMs were required to allow littoral movement of a single regimental-sized force- a mathematical problem that justifies the 35 ship requirement when maintenance and availability are factored in.

However, LSM program has been influenced as much by acquisition constraints as by operational theory. The Navy chose the LST-100 model on which the earlier ships would be based, to save on schedule and technical risk using an adult, non-developmental ship. In the first ship of the kind, called McClung, is the LSM-1, separately. The timeline of the program itself means that the first delivery is not far off, which makes it a necessity that bridging solutions and experimentation should bear the expectations of the nearest future.

It is no longer abstract experimentation. The described 2025 training cycle of III Marine Expeditionary Force involved distributing island operations and logistics experiments, such as simulated resupply using an autonomous, low-profile vessel in Okinawa. The same instinct is applied in the work of the Corps in uncrewed surface and aerial systems aimed to transport supplies and reduce human loss–work which views sustainment platforms as consumable and low-signature instruments, but not as beautiful ships which must never be lost.

The tank divestment is the headline since it is very easy to visualize. The real bet that Force Design is making is more prosaic: that mobility and sustainment can become resilient enough that small units can survive, network, and be of use within the surveillance-and-strike envelope of an adversary and that the Navy-Marine team can accomplish it without returning to the days of large, predictable supply chains which the concept is intended to avoid.
