Artemis II rollout puts NASA’s moon return on a tighter checklist

More than 700,000 gallons of super-cold propellants must flow through NASA’s new moon rocket in a full-up fueling rehearsal before anyone can confidently circle a date on the calendar.

This is the reality that exists behind the spectacular sight of NASA’s 322-foot Space Launch System, with the Orion crew capsule sitting atop it, slowly making its way out of the Kennedy Space Center’s Vehicle Assembly Building and beginning the long trek to Launch Pad 39B. This seems like a ceremonial process from a distant view, but it also has a purpose, as the program moves from assembly to the phase where the ground systems, flight components, and processes come together as a unified system.

For the four astronauts who will be aboard the Artemis II mission, which is set to last approximately 10 days, the rollout is a very opportune moment, as it is situated in a very small window between training and the point at which the constraints of the vehicle start to drive the schedule. The next major milestone that NASA has set for itself following the Artemis II rollout is the wet dress rehearsal, which is the countdown simulation where the rocket is loaded with cryogenic liquid oxygen and liquid hydrogen.

Artemis II also has an operational mission that may not be fully expressed in the public summary of “going back to the moon.” The mission is focused on a free return orbit, which is a path that swings the Orion spacecraft around the moon and, by the power of gravity, naturally curves it back towards Earth, requiring only a few major engine burns after leaving Earth orbit. It is a mission design that takes into account the need to return the astronauts safely to Earth while NASA is testing the crewed systems of Orion in deep space.

The “why not land?” question has a simple engineering answer. As NASA’s Patty Casas Horn explained in an interview: “The short answer is because it doesn’t have the capability. This is not a lunar lander.” Artemis II is a manned systems test mission that is very much like Apollo 8 in its philosophy to be an early test mission that focuses on navigation and operations rather than landing hardware.

This focus has become more defined since the original mission of Orion. After the return of Artemis I from its lunar mission in 2022, an unusual pattern of heat shield damage was discovered to be the result of gas released from Avcoat during re-entry. NASA has stated that the heat shield of Artemis II is designed to protect the crew through alterations in the entry trajectory of Orion.

On the ground, the pad campaign is more about looking for small discrepancies before they become large ones. NASA has described the late-stage troubleshooting that included trading a bent cable associated with the flight termination system and resolving Orion-related problems in a hatch pressurization valve and ground support equipment with breathing air leaks. It is because of these repairs that rollout is not the end of the process but the beginning of the most integrated phase of prelaunch activity. 

The launch opportunities are also impacted by the geometry, and not by need. NASA has offered the windows during which the Earth-Moon alignment will be beneficial for the mission requirements and reduce the duration of the eclipse to ensure that the Orion solar arrays continue to power and cool the spacecraft, including the windows in February through April 2026. As the rocket stands on the launch pad, the extent of the program is revealed in a different way not as a countdown timer, but as a checklist. “Artemis II is intended to prove that Orion is capable of sustaining a crew through the deep space routine of power, life support, heating, guidance, and human endurance before NASA undertakes the more complex choreography of lunar orbit operations and, eventually, landing.””
