The M1E3 Abrams Aims to Redefine Tank Warfare in the Drone Age

Abrams M1 tanks have remained the backbone of the United States armor forces for the last four decades. But it seems that even the best tanks can be tracked and hit by ‘swarming drones and long-range missiles.’ Instead of abandoning the notion of tanks altogether, the Army is “radically transforming it from the inside out. Excess weight is being shed for speed. Defensive abilities are being integrated into its design. The visibility and acoustics of the tank are being diminished by a propulsion system.”

The hybrid/electric propulsion system is believed to reflect the design intention of the M1E3. It is believed to have the ability to achieve 40% fuel efficiency while at the same time minimizing thermal and sound signatures. It will be difficult to track the M1E3 through the infrared detection system. It is easy to maintain other systems without listening to the sound coming from the gas turbine engine.

The survivability sector has essentially been turned upside down by the concept of modularity. Whereas before the armor and countermeasures would essentially just be added to a design, the M1E3 is intended to integrate them seamlessly. Whereas before the armor would essentially just be added to protect against threats, the Trophy Active Protection System, which was designed by the Israelis and includes drones as well as anti-tank missiles, will be added to the design of the tank itself.

The number of crew required has been cut from four to three because of the introduction of the autoloader. It assists in increasing the interior space to a large extent, thereby ensuring that the height of the turret is reduced to a minimum. Along with this, modifications have been done with respect to the design of the vehicle, thereby ensuring that the visibility of the vehicle in the battlefield area gets reduced to a minimum. However, the vehicle is equipped with a 120mm smooth-bore gun. Advanced ammunition and “loitering” weapons will, however, be incorporated in the future designs.

It is at this point that the M1E3 differs from the M1 Abrams and M1A1 Abrams tanks, as well as any other main battle tanks, inasmuch as the M1E3 differs largely in its strategies for attacking the enemy. The M1E3 is meant to be a key component of a combined arms attack, coupled with reconnaissance drones, jamming vehicles, and attack helicopters. Smaller drones will be deployed ahead of time to identify the target and relay its position back to the M1E3 fire control computer. The M1E3 will then be able to launch long-range artillery and missile strikes, ‘seeing first and striking first’ without having to put itself in harm’s way.

‘This fusion will require much more than just hardware. The troops of tomorrow will have to be able to conduct aerial reconnaissance just as well as their counterparts conduct gunnery events today. And then there is the additional role of AI in targeting. The military will need a new operational concept that fully integrates UAV operations and tactics. The concept is a standard part of operations rather than a research and development project. ‘A program manager for the Army said: ‘Our vision is to make the Abrams ‘apex predator on the future battlefield.’’

But, it is argued, it follows that even with technological advances, ‘the M1E3 will never be fully invulnerable and will be susceptible to fires and electronic warfare. The strategy of the Army appears to be based on a recognition that it will always require the power of main battle tanks—but with a recognition of a need for adaptation based on changing conditions.

Thus, with reduced logistical support, stealth capabilities, and a digital kill chain integrated, it will be superior where its predecessors would have failed. The prototypes are in the hands of the Army now and will be field-tested for the first time in 2026. The military will take it back and produce it en masse. The M1E3 may well see battle before the end of the 2030s and will provide a fighting machine for its armored units that will not be adequate for the last war but for ‘the contested and ‘data-rich battlefields of the war that will come next.’
