Trump’s “Very Strong Options” Put Iran’s Connectivity in Focus

The loudest signal around Iran’s unrest has not come from a missile battery or a press podium, but from the sudden silence of everyday communications followed by a blunt warning from President Donald Trump that the United States is weighing “very strong options.” That mix of coercive language and coerced disconnection has pushed a technical question into the center of geopolitical pressure: who controls the networks when a country goes dark?

For Iran’s leadership, symbolism and infrastructure have been treated as parallel tools. A cartoon that went up on the social media account of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei depicted Trump as a crumbling stone sarcophagus framed by hieroglyphics and the words “Like Pharaoh,” tying today’s confrontation to a narrative of rulers who fall at the peak of pride. It was an image that landed as Iran’s information environment was tightening, constraining the ability of outsiders – and Iranians abroad – to verify what is going on on the ground.

The technical signature described by monitoring groups and researchers has been notably broad. In addition to widespread disruptions to fixed-line and mobile, Starlink—a satellite service that has been much discussed as a sort of ad hoc “plan B” during shutdowns—has seen interference that researchers variously described as localized and inconsistent. NetBlocks confirmed satellite connectivity being jammed in a patchy pattern, while digital rights researcher Amir Rashidi said the observed disruption was unlike prior episodes. Reports cited an initial hit to traffic that climbed steeply within hours, consistent with use of high-powered jamming that can overwhelm user terminals rather than blocking content at the server level.

That matters because satellite internet isn’t just “internet from space.” Starlink terminals often depend on GPS signals for positioning, which has opened up a vulnerability when a state pushes electronic warfare tactics into civilian areas. Iran has disrupted GPS signals before, and the current episode has revived concerns that interference can be dialed up by neighborhood, creating pockets where uploads slip through and vast zones where they do not. The result is an uneven map of visibility: some communities can push out video, while others cannot, and nobody can assume conditions are stable from hour to hour.

Trump has publicly tied U.S. deliberations to reports of violence against protesters and said his administration may speak with Elon Musk about providing Starlink access. But the very same technical reality that makes satellite connectivity so appealing in a blackout makes it risky for end users when possession is illegal. The more a government frames external connectivity as foreign direction, the more the terminal itself becomes evidence.

Publicly discussed U.S. options range from cyber operations that target the disruption of state capabilities without strikes to this model, in which network resilience and network vulnerability exist on the same continuum-if the communications can be severed at will, they can also become targets-by states, by proxies, or by competing narratives.

For the engineer and security planner, the episode is a case study in modern control: physical streets may determine who holds ground, but radio noise, timing, and access lists increasingly determine who holds the story.
