CES 2026 is leaning hard into “ambient” tech systems that stay present, keep context, and promise to be helpful without being asked twice.

On the convention center floor, that idea shows up in wildly different shapes: a mini excavator that can talk back, wearables that treat daily life as input data, TVs that translate viewing habits into ad targeting, and robotaxis trying to turn autonomy into something riders can trust. The connective tissue isn’t a single gadget category. It’s the steady shift from tools people operate to systems that observe, infer, and recommend.
The most literal expression of that shift is heavy equipment. Caterpillar’s CES demo centered on an AI assistant piloted on a Cat 306 CR Mini Excavator, built on NVIDIA’s Jetson Thor. Onstage, Nvidia’s Deepu Talla framed it as a move from human-operated machines toward “robotic companions,” and Caterpillar CEO Joe Creed tied it to the company’s push to “use digital twins before we ever cut steel.” The pitch is practical: voice access to manuals, settings, and troubleshooting, with more intelligence migrating into the cab and into fleet operations.
Under the hood, the industry story is edge AI growing up. Jetson Thor is positioned as a “physical AI” computer meant for real-time inference in industrial systems, and CES messaging increasingly treats the cloud as optional rather than assumed. When assistants run close to sensors and actuators, latency and connectivity become engineering constraints instead of user experience footnotes.
In consumer tech, the ambient push is more personal and more fraught. Lenovo’s experimental Motorola “AI pin” concept pairs camera and voice capture with continuous awareness, but the company offered no concrete privacy details. Bee, an AI wearable acquired by Amazon, is moving in the opposite direction by adding features that turn conversation into logistics: voice notes, daily insights, and the ability to connect with email and calendar to draft messages or schedule events. Bee also claims audio recordings are not saved, underscoring how central data-handling promises have become to the product itself.
The same “always-on” logic is powering the living room economy. Walmart’s $2.3 billion purchase of Vizio keeps resurfacing at CES because it’s a clean explanation for modern hardware strategy: the value sits in Automatic Content Recognition (ACR) data, not the panel. As Walmart’s Mike O’Donnell put it, combining viewership signals with retail data is meant to create “full funnel attribution” for advertisers. It’s the TV as measurement device and, effectively, as a shopping sensor.
Mobility takes the same theme to the street. Waymo’s CES presence is more than a booth stunt; its next vehicle, the Zeekr-built Waymo Ojai, is described as carrying 13 cameras, six radar sensors, and four lidar sensors. Zoox, meanwhile, is treating Las Vegas as a showcase for a purpose-built, bi-directional robotaxi with no steering whee less retrofitted car, more designed experience. The engineering challenge isn’t just autonomy. It’s making sensing, interpretation, and assistance feel normal enough that people stop noticing the machine is always paying attention.
