Hipster robots, cuddly AI, and the quiet rebuild of CES

The most revealing moment on the CES floor arrives as a toy. At one booth, a plush cat with oversized blue eyes absorbs attention the way smartphones once did: endless hands, endless questions, and a battery that fades before the crowd does. The device responds to cuddles, complains about dizziness if it is shaken, and doubles as a voice diary that sends snippets into a companion app. Staff, aware of how quickly “companion” can drift into something darker, also point to guardrails designed to stop harmful prompts to children. The scene captures the current mood of consumer technology: AI everywhere, intimacy marketed as a feature, and safety framed as a necessary design constraint rather than a future upgrade.

CES has always been a festival of excess, but it now looks like a trade show trying to renegotiate its purpose. With more than 4,100 exhibitors spread across millions of square feet, the event stretches “consumer” to include personal aircraft, factory automation, and humanoids built for industrial shifts. The sensory overload remains the point: thumping demo music, walls of screens, and products that feel like they were invented to earn a one-line incredulous question.

Moving between halls reinforces how much “future” at CES is an exercise in logistics. The Las Vegas Convention Center Loop functions as a compressed version of a promised city: riders step into Teslas, still driven by humans, and arrive two minutes later in a different building. The system’s appeal is less its technology than its story—an everyday commute, simplified into a demo, that hints at what American public transport could look like when it is engineered as a product experience.

Inside, the bigger story is physical AI: machines that leave the screen and start negotiating the unpredictability of rooms, people, and objects. Hyundai Motor Group used CES to describe robotics as an end-to-end industrial strategy, leaning on Boston Dynamics and positioning humanoids as a future mass-market segment. The company’s newly emphasized “Physical AI” pitch depends on converting real-world activity into training data, then looping that learning back into machines across manufacturing and logistics.

Nvidia’s Jensen Huang provided the economic subtext. “Computing has been fundamentally reshaped as a result of accelerated computing, as a result of artificial intelligence,” he said, arguing that $10 trillion of last decade’s computing is being rebuilt for the AI era. On stage, the message was that smarter models and cheaper inference are turning once-theoretical assistants into practical systems, whether embedded in factories, deskside developer boxes, or robots that need to perceive and act in real time.

That promise is also what makes the cuddly toys feel consequential rather than cute. As AI companions become more persuasive and more emotionally fluent, regulators are beginning to treat children’s products as a special category; California’s proposed Senate Bill 867 would place a moratorium on certain chatbot-integrated toys while rules catch up. Researchers testing popular AI companions have documented how quickly systems can drift into inappropriate or risky dialogue, strengthening the case that “safe by design” must mean more than a marketing line.

For a few years, CES looked vulnerable to irrelevance as major brands shifted launches to their own stages and consumers tightened spending. This cycle, the show’s energy comes from a convergence: AI models getting cheaper to run, robots getting credible at work, and a new willingness to sell “relationship” as an interface. CES did not need to become smaller to feel important again; it needed technology that finally behaves as if it is ready to leave the demo.
