In 2023, Tim Cook “Your surroundings become an infinite canvas,” revealing Apple as the pioneer of spatial computing. Fewer than three years later that canvas is shrinking rapidly. IDC estimates that only approximately 45,000 units will be sold during the last quarter of 2025, which will be enough to make Apple Chinese manufacturing partner Luxshare to stop its production in the first half of 2025. It has been reported that the firm has cut funding on marketing the device by over 95 percent, a retreat, which highlights an uncharacteristically commercial misjudgment of a brand that has become synonymous with the blockbuster hardware.

Paperwork had it that the Vision Pro was technically a powerhouse. Its two, 2160 x 3840 OLED displays provided the vision of unparalleled clarity and ultra-low-latency processing with its own, custom, R1 and M2 chips. Integrated eye tracking was used to navigate through the interface without using controllers and pancake optics provided the user with better imagery compared to the Fresnel lenses on cheaper competitors. However, the high retail price of $3,499 put it in a different dimension to the aggressively-priced Meta Quest 3S at 299 which still included passthrough in full color, hand tracking, and a Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 processor.
Another point of contention was in form factor. The Vision Pro weighed more than the Quest 3S, which weighed 514 grams at around the same weight, 600-650 grams. Despite the customized fit technology and the optional device, “Pro Dual Loop”, which is a band, Apple has offered, long day use may be tiring. The tethering to an external battery pack, which lasts 2-3 hours, contributes to the constant tethering, which reviewers found unnecessary added cables and clutter to the headset and was seen as a detraction to the futuristic.
Another weak link was the app ecosystem. Although Apple was boasting 3,000 VisionOS apps, this was small compared to the iPhone software going on after 2007, and was nowhere near the breadth offered by the Horizon Store by Meta. Morgan Stanley analyst Erik Woodring was very clear: “We can say the cost, form factor and the lack of VisionOS native apps are the reasons why the Vision Pro never sold broadly.” Even the high fidelity spatial computing experience lacked a killer app or an essential use case to make it seem niche.
The woes of the Vision Pro are more indicative of macro trends in the uptake of VR and AR. Although spatial computing has improved through the application of LiDAR-based environmental mapping and SLAM-based accurate object placement, consumer adoption will be limited by the price of the hardware, social acceptance, and content access. Counterpoint Research estimates a 14% drop in sales of VR headsets every year, which is a disheartening indication of a sector that was previously billed as the new paradigm of computing.
The move of Apple to quit VR is similar to the turn taken by Meta, which last month talked about “shifting some of our investments from metaverse towards AI glasses and other wearables.” In the case of Apple, it would be halting the next generation of the Vision Pro to concentrate on AI-enabled products, such as future smart glasses that do not have immersive screens but rather use AI-based contextual support. It is hoped that such glasses will be the exclusive companion of Siri 2.0, which will be released in 2026 but will be able to process information in real time with Apple M5 chips and with an additional layer of help provided by Google Gemini model, offering privacy-aware intelligence via audio and subtle visual prompts.
This pivot is thus explained by the engineering philosophy of reducing complexity, making things more wearable, and using AI to create value in our everyday experience. Rather than the Vision Pro, which lacks any physical interactions with its environment, AI glasses would be used as the iPhone’s lightweight companion, equipped with built-in cameras and microphones to perform visual recognition, translation, and navigation, and have the computations remotely situated on compatible gadgets. This strategy deals with two of the most critical obstacles of the Vision Pro, which is bulk and cost, and the strategy also fits an ever-more market that may be less concerned with completely simulated worlds and more about the ambient, always-on intelligence.
This is precisely what happened to the Vision Pro, highlighting a bitter lesson about spatial computing: the technical excellence will not help without the perception of a price and lack of ecosystem pull. With Apple refocusing on AI-based wearables, the company is wagering that the new era of personal technology would be characterized not by high-resolution virtual screens but through contextualized, ubiquitous help that is a part of everyday existence.
