What’s harder than sending a rocket to Mars? Apparently, finding a clear sky and a government that’s open for business. Blue Origin’s second-ever New Glenn launch, its first NASA mission bound for the Red Planet, was scrubbed on Sunday after a day of shifting countdowns, rain, and the dreaded cumulus cloud rule, which prohibits launches through electrified cloud layers due to lightning strike risks. The 322-foot (98-meter) rocket, slated to lift off from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, was to carry NASA’s twin ESCAPADE orbiters, built by Rocket Lab, on a multi-year journey to study how solar wind stripped Mars of its atmosphere.

The wait was further complicated by an unusual restriction: an emergency order from the Federal Aviation Administration prohibiting daytime commercial launches through the duration of the US government shutdown. That edict, intended to lighten work for unpaid air traffic controllers, shut the window for New Glenn’s backup launch slots on Monday and Tuesday.“We are working really closely with both our partners at the FAA and with the NASA team to ensure that we’re, of course, honoring and respecting the airspace expectations there and the safety requirements, while at the same time meeting the objectives that NASA and the Blue Origin have for this mission.” said Laura Maginnis, vice president of mission management at Blue Origin.
The ESCAPADE mission, short for Escape and Plasma Acceleration Dynamics Explorer, has been delayed since October 2024. Its twin spacecraft will orbit Mars in 2027, investigating atmospheric loss and space weather patterns critical to future crewed missions. “We will be making the space weather measurements we need to understand the system well enough to forecast solar storms whose radiation could harm astronauts on the surface of Mars or in orbit, bit.” said principal investigator Robert Lillis of UC Berkeley’s Space Sciences Laboratory.
For Blue Origin, this flight is more than a science delivery; it’s a proving ground for its reusable launch ambitions. New Glenn’s first orbital mission in January successfully deployed the Blue Ring Pathfinder test payload but failed to land its booster on the drone ship Jacklyn due to a reignition issue. Engineers have since implemented changes to the propellant management system and minor hardware upgrades to help improve booster recovery odds. Maginnis acknowledged the stakes but added, “If we don’t land the booster, that’s OK. We have several more vehicles in production.”
New Glenn is designed to be a heavyweight competitor to SpaceX’s Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy: taller by about a third than Falcon 9, and with a GEO capacity of 45 tons to LEO, almost twice what Falcon 9 can handle. It’s constructed to handle at least 25 missions per booster. The first stage is supposed, like those of SpaceX’s fleet, to return to Earth and land on a sea-based platform for refurbishment and reuse, a strategy to dramatically lower the per-launch cost and increase cadence.
In the larger context, this is an increasingly competitive launch market in transition. An unprecedented 132 Falcon 9 launches were completed by SpaceX in 2024 with a success rate of 99%, while United Launch Alliance’s Vulcan Centaur, Europe’s Ariane 6, and others are racing to establish regular flight cadence. Success by Blue Origin with New Glenn could accelerate Amazon’s Project Kuiper deployment, adding to satellite broadband competition with SpaceX’s Starlink. For industry observers, competition like this begets innovation. More launches mean more ideas in space. It can’t be a bad thing to have Blue Origin, even trailing behind.”
The shutdown restrictions imposed by the FAA reflect the complex choreography between rocket trajectories and the management of national airspace. Launches to destinations like Mars need precise timing when planetary alignments minimize fuel use, leaving little room to maneuver into nighttime windows. For New Glenn, the weather needs to align with the political gridlock as well as its orbital mechanics. When New Glenn finally flies, it will carry not only NASA’s Mars probes but also Blue Origin’s aspirations to break SpaceX’s near-monopoly on high-frequency, reusable launches.
The success or failure of that mission would reverberate through the $10 billion backlog of Blue Origin, which has contracted to conduct deliveries of lunar landers under NASA’s Artemis program. For the time being, the towering rocket remains at its pad, a token of both engineering ambition and the fickle forces-meteorological and bureaucratic alike-that rule over the road to space.
