It is not often that the CEO of America’s largest bank tells millions of workers that their jobs could disappear, but Jamie Dimon is not mincing words. “AI will eliminate jobs. That doesn’t mean that people won’t have other jobs,” Dimon told Fox News’ “Sunday Morning Futures.” His advice? Master critical thinking, emotional intelligence and communication-skills he says will guarantee “plenty of jobs” even as automation quickens.

Comments from Dimon have come as technology executives have spoken in increasingly frank tones about the velocity and size of disruption. Anthropic chief executive Dario Amodei has said that, within five years, AI could wipe out as many as half of all entry-level white-collar jobs and push unemployment rates among younger workers into double digits. “Maybe there’s a job in the world that AI won’t change, but I haven’t thought of it.” Walmart’s Doug McMillon has gone on to say.
It all goes back to the particular constraints of those AI systems. Large language models can summarize documents, draft reports, and even code at near-human levels; however, studies have shown that nuanced judgment, contextual reasoning, and complex interpersonal communication are well beyond their grasp. In many areas-as Dimon among others cited-the human strengths-like the capability to decipher subtext, weigh ethical considerations, or adapt under uncertainty-are those that, so far, no algorithms can master.
That is quite a shift from the labour economics perspective. McKinsey’s latest global survey finds that, by 2030, 39% of the core skills of workers will change, as analytical thinking, resilience, and social influence rise in importance along with AI and data literacy. Yet, 69% of more than 2,800 granular skills examined still fell into a category with “low or very low” capacity for substitution by generative AI, many of them rooted in human interaction-such as empathy, active listening, and moral reasoning.
These are not “soft” skills in any stereotypical sense. For instance, emotional intelligence enables leaders both to anticipate the emotional impact of change on others and to build trust and resolve conflict. Alison Wood Brooks of Harvard University hails active listening-probing for more information after someone’s response-a “superhero move” that few practice but many appreciate. Behaviors like these become differentiators in collaboration and influence in an AI-augmented workplace.
Critical thinking protects against the failures of AI as well: experts interrogate sources of data, watch out for bias, and use contextual judgment to make sure machine output is right and relevant. The World Economic Forum rated creativity, originality, and initiative as the top three emerging skills, underlining once more the fact that innovation depends on human vision, not on computational power.
The threat for early-career workers multiplies by the way that AI is eroding traditional “courage labs” entry-level jobs that hitherto provided messy, real-world experiences so vital in leadership development. As AI handles customer inquiries, the writing of communications, and routine tasks, young professionals will be hard-pressed to find opportunities to develop resilience, interpersonal agility, and moral courage. Experts say these roles need to be redesigned to preserve the experiences through simulation, cross-functional projects, and structured mentorship.
Emergent strategies for reskilling are meeting this demand. Programs such as Generation-a provider of training conducted hand in hand with sectors showcasing high job growth-report placement rates upwards of 80%. In McKinsey’s survey, 82% of executives said retraining by employers can be at least half the solution toward bridging gaps, but only 16% “feel very prepared” to act-underlining urgent need for coordinated public-private investment.
Dimon’s vision is not one of just survival. He has said that, if given due regulatory and phasing consideration, over time, AI can make possible a three-and-a-half-day workweek in 20 to 40 years-and a good life. He warned, however, that if the introduction of it happened too fast for society to retrain then “we can’t assimilate all those people that quickly,” risking economic and social stress.
To professionals forging this transition, the implication seems as clear as day: meld technological literacy with the skill set unique to humans-learn to think critically under duress, learn to communicate with precision and feeling, and learn to lead through complexity. These uniquely human capabilities will form the substratum of employability-and the best defense against being automated out of relevance-in an economy where AI agents can execute workflows end-to-end.
