Baikonur Launchpad Collapse Halts Russia’s Crewed Spaceflights

Could one failure in the engineering realm halt the entire space program in the entire nation? This was starkly answered on November 27, 2025, at the Baikonur Cosmodrome launch pad in Kazakhstan. Just moments after the successful launch of Soyuz MS-28, with two Roscosmos cosmonauts and one NASA astronaut aboard, bound for the International Space Station, the mammoth portable service gangway was flipped nose-first in the flame trench, thus eliminating the last remaining spaceflight capability in Russia.

The mobile maintenance cabin, identified as 8U0216, is a 144-ton mobile steel platform measuring 19.06 by 16.92 meters, featuring dual lifting platforms. It allows engineers direct working access to the first stage, second stage, Soyuz rocket engines. During launch preparation, the maintenance facility provides telemachnicians with necessary services such as removal of protecting covers, installation of pyrotechnic ignition, and conduct final system preparations. After setup, the facility goes back into its protected position behind a metal curtain.

In this launch, either the train was not properly secured or the seals didn’t hold up. With the ignition of the Soyuz 2.1a’s engines, a difference in pressure was generated between the area where the exhaust was released, located beneath the rocket, and the corner where the train was placed. This pressure caused the train to be ripped away from its installation, plummeting 20 meters into the flame trench. A drone’s footage remains as evidence of the incident, showing metal wreckage, charred areas, and dumped debris along the trench floor.

Site 31/6, the pad involved, is Russia’s only approved launch site for crew Soyuz and Progress flights to the ISS. Other launch pads with Soyuz capabilities, like those being built in Plesetsk or Vostochny Cosmodromes, are either situated in non-optimal positions with regard to ISS docking or do not yet allow human spaceflight. Gagarin’s Start, the iconic pad that launched cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin in 1961, was shut down in 2019 with plans for its transformation into a museum. With the downing of Site 31/6, there’s been no ISS astronaut or freight launch from Russia.

However, Roscosmos asserts that “all the necessary reserve elements are there to restore it and the damage will be eliminated very soon.” But independent experts, such as Anatoly Zak of RussianSpaceWeb, say that repairs may take several months to two years. Recently constructed modules for other launch complexes will take two years for production. Although spare components may be stocked away in reserve or even harvested from idle launch pads, the component requires thorough testing before resuming any launch activity.

ISS logistics, as well as other associated space projects, will be impacted. ISS Resupply Mission Progress MS-33, initially set for December 21, will be postponed indefinitely. Crew Rotation Missions like Soyuz MS-29, tentatively scheduled for July 2026, will see delays with higher degrees of probability. Prior to launching any crew-operated spaceflight from a renovated launch pad, there will be a mandatory uncrewed verification spaceflight.

In terms of engineering, this incident draws attention to weaknesses in Soviet designs that remain in use. Site 31/6 was built in 1961, with more than 400 launch events. An upgrade was carried out in 2005, enabling the facility for use with Soyuz-2 launchers. However, the basic design of this launch facility still includes use of mechanical locks for securing launch components. With regard to this incident, structural ejection via pressure difference strongly indicates weakness in equipment, operator error, or a combination of both. There may also be other damaged components, such as cables, sensors, or flame liners.

Of course, restoring the flame trench is a huge task. This is structural concrete designed to deflect blast exhaust property away from the pad. It will withstand huge temperature as well as sound stresses. It might as well compromise further if something goes wrong with its integrity in a future launch. Debris removal, heat shield lining, and exhaust system recalibration will take months. Geopolitically, the demise occurs as the Russian space agency is already beset with issues stemming from sanctions, insufficient budgets, and diminishing worldwide contracts.

Although SpaceX’s Crew Dragon carries a heavier ISS crew transport workload, the Soyuz is still necessary as a complementary solution, particularly with delays in Boeing’s Starliner schedule. With the halt in Soyuz flights, ISS will see more activity carried out through use of U.S. capabilities, thus expediting America’s control of low-Earth orbit.

Historically, Russia has been the only country with uninterrupted human spaceflight capabilities since the launch of Gagarin in 1961. This incident represents the first time that this record will be broken. Ironically, this incident draws strong similarities in NASA’s grounding in the wake of Columbia in 2003, except in this scenario, the flaw is with the ground system as opposed to the spacecraft.
