Is a once-overlooked voice assistant going to be Samsung’s AI crown jewel? That is the question on everyone’s mind as the company makes its latest strategic move, replacing much of Bixby’s backend intelligence with Perplexity AI. That’s a decisive step away from its long-standing reliance on Google’s Gemini. According to reliable industry tipster @chunvn8888, the Galaxy S26 series, expected at the beginning of 2026, will make its debut with this integration-positioning Bixby to handle routine on-device commands while handing off complex reasoning and deep search tasks to Perplexity.

Indeed, this architecture is very similar to the way Apple integrated ChatGPT into Siri, but Samsung’s implementation is positioned to focus on the unique strengths of Perplexity. It will still retain native system-level control-for things like toggling settings, managing alarms, and talking to One UI-while Perplexity takes over with multi-step queries, research-heavy prompts, and contextual reasoning. Technical handoffs between the two are designed to rely on task classification models that determine whether to process requests locally or route them over to Perplexity’s cloud-based LLMs, optimizing for both speed and capability.
The engineering pedigree of Perplexity is formidable: in May 2025, it processed 780 million search queries-tripling its traffic from mid-2024-with an average complex-query response time of just 2.5 seconds and a 95% accuracy rate. The Pro Search feature scans upwards of 300 sources per query and does so by asking clarification questions before returning results, while the Spaces tool allows users to organize research threads and collaborate with others. This starkly contrasts with the often more opaque, occasionally slower output from Gemini and aligns with the push from Samsung for transparency and trust in AI responses.
But integration won’t stop at voice interactions: Samsung is said to embed Perplexity into its default browser, offering functionality such as page summarization, real-time fact retrieval, and AI-powered navigation-all without leaving Samsung Internet. That would make this browser less of a “Chrome backup” and more the go-to research hub, bolstered by Perplexity’s citation-rich output. On-device AI will continue to play a role-most notably in deploying Perplexity’s Comet browser technology, which leverages the WebML APIs to run models locally for privacy and speed-but most of the heavy lifting falls to cloud infrastructure, to which Perplexity has scaled out at an international level to support features in 46 different languages.
Given the Galaxy S26 launch timeline is now pegged for late January of 2026-with sales starting in February-this gives Samsung months to refine this dual-assistant ecosystem. One UI 8.5 will reportedly ship with options to select Gemini, Perplexity, or Samsung’s own Gauss AI for different tasks, offering unprecedented flexibility. This multi-agent approach has considerable appeal for power users who want to toggle between assistants depending on the job-perhaps Gemini for document drafting in Google Workspace and Perplexity for technical research where source citations are necessary.
The gravity of this pivot is underlined by Samsung’s investment strategy: it is said to be preparing to join the ranks of Perplexity’s funding round of $500 million at a $14 billion valuation, deepening a relationship that kicked off with earlier backing via Samsung NEXT. This isn’t a swap; it’s a long-term bet on Perplexity as foundational AI partner. Embedding it at the level of the OS, into Bixby, and into core apps, could give Samsung tighter control over its AI roadmap while reducing dependency on Google’s ecosystem.
To the users, the change promises a tangible shift in everyday interactions: a query for restaurants could yield source-credited reviews from multiple platforms in seconds; a request for product specs might return structured comparisons with vendor whitepapers. Even complex prompts, such as to analyze a microservices architecture for real-time analytics, could be handled directly on a Galaxy device thanks to Perplexity’s multimodel access-including GPT-4o, Claude 3.7, Gemini 2.0, and more-in automatic selection of the best model for the query.
From an industry perspective, this is a move by Samsung to define its own AI identity, just as Apple did when it started building out Apple Maps to supplant Google’s service. If it pays off, the Perplexity-powered Bixby could make Samsung’s assistant go from afterthought to flagship feature: one which competes head-on with Siri, Alexa, and Google Assistant in both capability and user trust. With AI-first design the next battleground in smartphones, the Galaxy S26 may well be the point at which Samsung steps firmly into the lead.
