US Shutdown Stalls OnePlus 15 FCC Approval, Delays Launch

A flagship smartphone can be packed, polished, and poised for market domination – and still be stopped cold by politics. That’s exactly what happened to the OnePlus 15, whose US debut has been pushed back despite a global rollout, thanks to the ripple effects of the recent federal government shutdown.

The OnePlus 15 cleared every stage of the device authorization process with the United States Federal Communications Commission. “As is the case with every smartphone manufacturer, the United States’ Federal Communications Commission certifies OnePlus devices before they are sold in the US. As a result of the government shutdown, device certifications have been delayed.” says Spenser Blank, Head of Marketing & Communications, OnePlus North America. The company confirmed that it had completed all lab tests conducted in FCC-recognized facilities and had submitted formal applications. All that was pending was the administrative sign-off, which was stalled by the agency’s reduced capacity during the 42-day shutdown.

This FCC certification is an important checkpoint for any consumer electronics device emitting radio frequencies, from smartphones down to wireless speakers. It makes sure that such devices address spectrum regulations, electromagnetic interference limits, and safety standards. And it is required if products are to be sold legally in the US. You can’t get them off the boats until they have their certification. said Harold Feld, senior vice president at Public Knowledge. The bureaucratic logjam has delayed other launches as well, including Leica’s M EV1 camera and Razer’s Raiju V3 Pro wireless controller.

The effects of the shutdown on the FCC were extreme: 81 percent of its workforce 1,044 employees were furloughed, ending licensing services, spectrum management and most consumer protection functions. Although activities necessary for the protection of life or property remained ongoing, routine approvals such as certification of the OnePlus 15 were put on hold. Even today, as the shutdown has been lifted, the FCC is warning of an exceptionally large number of filings and submissions that will need to be processed, which will lead to a backlog likely to increase delays for weeks.

For OnePlus, the timing is particularly frustrating. The OnePlus 15 arrived in China back in October, and came globally at $899.99 with 12GB RAM and 256GB storage, or $999.99 with 16GB RAM and 512GB storage. It uses Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chip and runs on OxygenOS 16. It boasts a 6.78-inch Full HD+ display with a 120Hz adaptive refresh rate. It comes fitted with a triple 50MP camera array, abetted by the in-house DetailMaxEngine that fuses multiple exposures-including one 50MP frame-with several 12MP shots for crisp 26MP imagery. Low-light capabilities are further amplified by the Clear Night Engine, capturing multiple levels of brightness for a more natural outcome.

Its 7,300mAh silicon-carbon battery is one of the hottest engineering talking points in the Chinese version, promising genuine two-day battery life. Silicon-carbon chemistry fits higher energy density into thinner cells than traditional lithium-ion-a leap Chinese manufacturers have broadly embraced but remains relatively rare in US devices. The battery in the OnePlus 15 beats the 6,000mAh pack used in its predecessor, the OnePlus 13, and puts this phone squarely in the “battery beast” category among today’s flagships. Still, regulatory and market constraints might see that battery tech fail to make it into the US version, which could lower the device’s appeal.

More than the actual device, the shutdown demonstrates how much the technology supply chain is intertwined with government operations. Delays in regulatory processes disrupt launch schedules, lock up revenue streams, and complicate marketing campaigns. For hardware makers, especially importers of devices, every day of delay can translate to missing sales windows and a competitive disadvantage. For smaller technology firms that cannot boast fiscal resilience similar to that of giants, this is particularly true when certifications stall, contracts freeze, or the funding pipelines dry up. As happened during this shutdown, agencies like the FCC, NIST, and CISA go into minimal operation, affecting not just consumer electronics but also cybersecurity readiness and standards in development.

The OnePlus 15 case is a high-profile example of a broader phenomenon: in the modern tech economy, engineering excellence and manufacturing efficiency are not enough. Political stability and functional regulatory systems are as essential to a product’s success as its processor speed or camera quality. For US consumers eager to get their hands on OnePlus’s latest flagship, the wait will continue until the FCC clears its backlog and issues the final approval.
