Adobe Reveals AI Assistants Bringing Chat-Based Control to Express and Photoshop

“We think this approach of switching between two modes, where you get the best of both worlds, is gonna make the technology both accessible and controllable,” said Alexandru Costin, Adobe’s VP of generative AI. That says it all in a nutshell: the philosophy driving Adobe’s newest integrations of AI into its tools with the purpose not just of automating but really augmenting creative control, be it for professionals, students, or casual designers.

Adobe Express introduced a dedicated AI assistant mode, which transformed the whole app into a creation environment using only prompts. Instead of clicking through menus and panels, users can write out natural language instructions to create new images, edit design elements, or entirely recompose layouts. This mode makes use of contextual and semantic understanding of the various design components to make precise edits in fonts, images, and backgrounds, leaving everything else in composition intact. And if needed, at any time, creators can toggle back into the traditional interface and instantly see all manual controls like sliders, color pickers, and layer adjustments at their fingertips.

The underpinning technology leverages a mix of Adobe’s own Firefly generative AI models along with third-party agents in an orchestrated architecture in order to determine the best model to be used for every operation. Firefly Image Model 5, now in public beta, natively generates images at a 4MP resolution with photorealistic lighting, texture fidelity, and anatomically accurate portraits. It has also been hooked up with more advanced features like Prompt to Edit, allowing edits to be specified in plain language, while Layered Image Editing allows for context-aware compositing. Meanwhile, partner integrations-including Topaz Gigapixel for Generative Upscale, Black Forest Labs’ FLUX.1 Kontext for Generative Fill-add to the breadth of the assistant across both image creation and enhancement.

The AI assistant in Photoshop lives in the sidebar, is currently in closed beta, and is engineered for deep layer awareness: It can automatically select objects, create masks, and perform repetitive operations that involve removing backgrounds or changing colors. In “agentic” mode, the complicated interface folds up into a minimal prompt field, and tasks like resizing or harmonizing foreground elements with the lighting and tone of their backgrounds can be accomplished in seconds. The new feature Harmonize, for example, replaces the laborious process of manually matching colors and shadows in composite images, which used to involve multiple adjustment layers and fine-tuning.

Beyond individual applications, Adobe works on Project Moonlight, an orchestration assistant that will coordinate the work of AI agents across Creative Cloud. It’s like a conductor: connected to a creator’s style through Creative Cloud libraries and social channels, it creates cohesive content strategies and builds assets. Its context-aware intelligence can analyze social performance data, identify engagement trends, and produce designs matched not just to aesthetic preferences but also to audience growth goals.

Integration with OpenAI’s ecosystem is also to come. Adobe Express GPT for ChatGPT enables users to start design projects within the chatbot, leveraging over 200,000 professionally designed templates. Users can import these into Express for polishing with features such as Firefly-powered Text to Image, Generative Fill, and Text to Template. This workflow closes a critical gap between conversational ideation and high-fidelity editing, minimizing friction from concept to execution.

Enterprise adoption will also be a big focus. Future Express AI Assistant features will include template locking, batch creation, and approval workflows to help large teams maintain brand consistency while empowering non-designers to create professional-grade visuals. As Sakura Martin of dentsu said, “Adobe’s approach provides more confidence for employees who don’t have design experience, while helping pro designers save time on mundane tasks.”

These are not tools designed to replace the creative spark of a human but to automate all the mechanical aspects. Deeply embedded in the creative workflow, be it by way of layer-aware automation in Photoshop, conversational design in Express, or cross-application orchestration in Project Moonlight, Adobe positions its tools as collaborative partners that adapt to the creator’s intent, style, and technical requirements.
