Flights canceled, runways shut, and military airspace violated all by drones costing less than a family vacation. Over the past few weeks, Denmark’s Aalborg, Billund, and Copenhagen airports have been added to the increasing number of European locations that have been disrupted by unauthorized UAVs, recalling the bedlam caused by Gatwick’s 33-hour closure in 2018. The breaches haven’t left out military bases: reports along Skrydstrup and Karup Air Bases, which house Denmark’s F-16 and F-35 squadrons, have sounded alarms over weakness on NATO’s northern front.

The frequency and extent of the events indicate something greater than amateur pranksterism. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has referred to them as “the most serious attack on Danish critical infrastructure to date,” presenting the events as part of a hybrid warfare campaign. Justice Minister Peter Hummelgaard cautioned the objective is “to spread fear, create division and frighten us.” Moscow is denying it, but European leaders cite a trend of suspected Russian UAV action along Poland, Romania, and Estonia, commonly coinciding with political summits or military maneuvers.
From a technical standpoint, the problem is daunting. Consumer drones, even high-end ones, are compact, nimble, and hard to pinpoint on traditional radar. They can loiter at low levels, take advantage of blind spots, and fly autonomously if programmed. Their low thermal and acoustic signatures render them invisible to conventional surveillance systems. At Gatwick, RF jammers of military quality were utilized, yet the system did not detect any targets even after 115 “credible” reports highlighting how hard it is to tell a drone from a bird, helicopter, or even far-off lights.
Detection is merely half the fight. Today’s civilian airport defenses draw on passive technologies: radar, optical sensors, and RF detectors from firms such as Thales and Dedrone. Active countermeasures lasers, high-power microwaves, or interceptor drones are still infrequent in populated regions because of safety issues. Germany’s draft legislation to allow police to shoot down drones represents a movement towards kinetic solutions, such as “lasers or jamming signals to sever control and navigation links,” but these would need to be accurately targeted lest they cause collateral damage to planes or infrastructure.
Electronic warfare presents a non-lethal solution. Broad-area jamming can cut the UAV-operator link, causing the drone to land or go into failsafe mode. However, as Danish officials point out, existing jamming systems do not have the specificity to target a specific threat alone, threatening to interfere with legitimate communications and navigation systems nearby. Directed jamming, being developed by the British Army, holds out the possibility of finer control, which could enable airports to deflect hostile drones without halting traffic.
Military bases have a similar but separate issue. In the United States, NORAD commander Gen. Gregory Guillot said 350 drone sightings were detected at more than 100 installations in one year, many suspected of being used for surveillance. Legal restrictions mean only some “covered installations” can use active countermeasures, with gaps in protection. European militaries are already trying to solve this by splitting tasks: police responding to low-altitude drones, military units responding to higher-altitude or more advanced systems.
The EU’s most ambitious solution is the planned “drone wall” a continent-wide system of radars, acoustic sensors, RF detectors, and interceptors for 360-degree coverage. Its design is informed by lessons from Ukraine: layered defences integrating machine guns, missiles, interceptor drones, and AI-powered tracking for classifying threats in real time. As EU Defence Commissioner Andrius Kubilius summed it up, “We need to move fast taking all the lessons from Ukraine and making this drone wall together with Ukraine.” However, analysts warn high-level defense for each potential target is fiscally impossible, considering that an attack drone like a Shahed costs approximately $50,000whereas the defense of one location costs several times as much.
In the meantime, Denmark is reinforcing its defenses with Swedish-provided anti-drone systems in preparation for the EU summit in Copenhagen. Germany is establishing specialist counter-UAV police squads and looking at Rheinmetall’s Skyranger gun system for use in peacetime. Airports are incorporating AI into surveillance to minimize false positives and accelerate response. But the operational truth is: the majority of civilian locations can spot a drone; not many can halt one before it disrupts.
The incursions unveil a gap in Europe’s airspace defense one in which low-cost, unidentifiable UAVs can disrupt both civilian travel and military readiness. Closing the gap will need more than new technology it will need harmonized legal power, synchronized command arrangements, and political will to move before the next generation of drones appears.
