Former President Donald Trump has reignited political controversy by demanding the jailing of his critics, naming Liz Cheney and members of the January 6 committee in a series of Twitter-like posts on his Truth Social site. Trump’s latest attack on Cheney, a high-profile Republican critic and former vice chair of the committee, occurs amid growing concerns of political persecution if he is re-elected president in 2024.
Trump’s tweets, which were on a Sunday, asserted that Cheney needed to “go to jail along with the rest” of the January 6 House committee, whom he disparagingly called the “unselect committee.”
Liz Cheney, one of the two members of the January 6 committee who are Republicans, lost her House seat to Trump-backed Harriet Hageman in 2022. Still, Cheney refuses to back down from Trump’s attacks, pointing out that the former President is “afraid of the truth.”
The January 6 committee, which was set up to probe the Capitol riot and the lead-up to it, found that Trump had tried to overturn the 2020 election results. Trump also faces charges on a number of fronts, such as the 2020 election interference in Georgia, the wrongful retention of government documents, and hush-money payments.
Trump’s Truth Social rant featured a link to a story by Kash Patel, a former Trump administration staffer, claiming that Cheney and the committee “suppressed evidence” clearing Trump of any involvement in the insurrection. Trump posted, “She [Cheney] should be prosecuted for what she has done to our country! She illegally destroyed the evidence. Unreal!!!”
The former President’s calls for Cheney’s imprisonment reflect a larger right-wing narrative, such as unsubstantiated assertions the FBI had planned the January 6 violence—an idea believed by a large minority of Americans, especially Republicans and watchers of some right-leaning news media despite no evidence that this is a conspiracy theory. This mirrors a national divide between attitudes toward the Capitol riot and continuing political polarization.
Trump’s call for political rivals to be jailed has not only intensified the discord within the GOP but also served to accentuate the long-lasting influence of the January 6 probe on American politics. As America moves closer to the next cycle of presidential elections, the country remains sharply divided about what happened that day and the role of the previous President in those events.
