A Russian missile ship in Kaliningrad was destroyed by fire and seriously damaged following a special operation by Ukrainian military intelligence on April 7, a Kyiv Post source in the Ukrainian intelligence reports.

The missile ship, the Serpukhov, was docked at the Baltiysk Naval Base in Russia’s farthest western point in Kaliningrad, crammed between Poland and Lithuania. The source said that information about victims was being worked out, but the ship itself was “not good.” Thought of repairs is long term, the source suggested.
These assertions were supplemented by a HUR Telegram channel post, accepting responsibility for the attack and admitting that in the fire, “its means of communication and automation were completely destroyed.” The Serpukhov is also renowned for its stealth capabilities and capability for firing Kalibr or Oniks anti-ship cruise missiles that have been employed in Russian action against Ukraine.
This is not the first time Ukrainian intelligence is credited with targeting Russian naval vessels. A previous operation by HUR reportedly attacked and seriously damaged the Russian Project 22160 patrol vessel Sergey Kotov off the coast in the area of the Kerch Strait during the evening of March 5.
The strategic implications of the occurrence are substantial, with Kaliningrad’s position in the Baltic Sea region where Russian-allied tensions have escalated, especially after the alliance’s expansion into Sweden and Finland after Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. The Baltic Sea, as cited by Newsweek, quoting allied officials, can now effectively be termed a “NATO Lake” as a mark of Western bloc superiority in the region.
That clandestine operation was also the handiwork of the Main Intelligence Directorate of Ukraine (HUR), said one of its sources. Those allegations have not been independently verified, and Newsweek contacted the Russian and Ukrainian defense ministries for comment. If confirmed, those reports of a successful Ukrainian operation in Russian-occupied territory would be a bold and belligerent move, but the lack of independent verification has to be treated with skepticism.
