Over 47,700 Dead: Mediazona’s Data Highlights Russia’s Mounting War Toll

In a stark report revealing the human cost of the Ukraine war, Russian independent news agency Mediazona, in cooperation with BBC Russia, has verified the identities of 47,700 Russian troops who have died since the beginning of Russia’s complete invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. This number, which is based on open-source research, is found in a meticulous collation of publicly available sources, including obituaries, family members’ social media messages, local news reports, and regional governmental announcements.

The current death toll, updated with an additional 3,047 names since Mediazona’s last report in late February, only scratches the surface of the war’s true cost. Journalists caution that the actual numbers are “likely higher,” given the restrictive nature of the data collection and the unknowns associated with such a dynamic conflict. Open source research inherently relies on what is publicly available and acknowledges the potential for a significant number of unreported or undocumented casualties.

Unpicking the numbers, the statistics indicate a loss of more than 3,200 troops, of whom 381 were Lieutenant Colonels or higher a significant blow to the seniority within the ranks of the Russian military hierarchy. The troops are drawn mainly from Russian areas like Rostov, Sverdlovsk, Bashkiria, Chelyabinsk, and the Republic of Buryatia, plotting a demographic profile of the nation’s involvement in the war.

Russian army casualties are widely estimated. A joint report by Mediazona and Meduza published on February 24 suggested a minimum of 83,000 Russian troops have been killed in the conflict. In the meantime, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg approximated, on March 14, the death of more than 350,000 Russian soldiers, a total including both dead and wounded servicemen, which aligns with estimates by U.S. officials stating that more than 315,000 Russian soldiers had been killed or wounded during the war.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, hitting a different note, recently stated that at least 180,000 Russian troops had been killed a far cry from his referencing 31,000 Ukrainian troops as casualties on his side. Zelensky did admit that precise numbers are unavailable and would presumably only be determinable upon the recapture of disputed territories.

Added complexity in measuring the actual human cost of war stems from the complexities of information warfare in which each side might put forward various narratives that align with their interests. The unreliability of getting accurate tallies is indicative of the “fog of war” and disarray that comes with such extensive hostilities.
