The 1991 F-14 Tomcat Emergency Landing That Proved Its Legendary Design

Few have been able to inspire the imagination and affections as much as the F-14 Tomcat. As much as the great abilities of the Tomcat were hyped by the big-screen blockbusters like “Top Gun” films, so too were they flown over the reality-based high-stakes environment of the carrier-based combat. One is reminded by one’s memory from 1991.

The event up for review took place over the Persian Gulf. The F-14 Tomcat from the squadron of the Ghost Riders experienced a horrible case of in-flight failure when the nose cone fell off during flight by an altitude above 8,000 meters, causing the crew to make an emergency landing on the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN-69).

LtCdr. Joe F. Edwards, the pilot during the ordeal, spoke about the incident, mentioning the most important points that led to the success of the recovery. Edwards went on to explain that the locking device on the radar dome below the fuselage had corroded and dropped into the ocean. Yeah, there was a locking mechanism at the 6 o’clock position underneath the fuselage on the F-14 where you lock the radome down radome is radar dome there’s a flat radar antenna back behind there, and the locking mechanism had corroded and actually fell out into the ocean.

The pilot claimed We dumped fuel to lighten the weight to get the approach airspeed as low as possible, but I saved enough gas to make it to Carswell if my plan didn’t work and I had to wave off, went on to say As we started our approach the Commanding Officer gave me a call and said the crash cars were set up and the LSOs were on station and ready to make recovery.

Luckily, all those approaches I practiced in the trainer helped me land the Tomcat exactly where I wanted and sure enough, it worked. My hook snagged the arrestment cable right at the maximum allowable speed and it operated as advertised even though I pulled every inch of available cable down the runway.

The plane, retired from service in 2006, has left an indelible mark on the military flight of the United States, from the Vietnamese heavens to the Libyan and Iraq Wars. The Tomcat had the ability to cruise at nearly unheard-of speeds of Mach 2.3, making it nearly as fast as the fifth-generation F-22 Raptor.
