Russian Bombers and Fighters Intercepted Near Alaska’s ADIZ

“What does this indicate when Cold War-era bombers are still garnering full-intercept response from one of the most scrutinized airspaces on the planet?

On September 24, 2025, the North American Aerospace Defense Command had identified and tracked two Tupolev Tu-95 “Bear” long-range strategic bombers and two Sukhoi Su-35 multi-role fighters entering the Alaskan Air Defense Identification Zone. The aircraft remained out over the high seas, never entering sovereign Canadian or U.S. airspace but causing an immediate coordinated intercept response. NORAD scrambled an E-3 Sentry Airborne Warning and Control System Airborne early warning aircraft, four F-16 Fighting Falcons, and four KC-135 Stratotankers to monitor and tail the Russian package.

The introduction of the Tu-95 in 1956 made the plane one of the most recognizable and enduring military aircraft still active. Four Kuznetsov NK-12 turboprop propulsion utilizing contra-rotating propellers give the plane the ability to carry 15,000 kilograms of payload including nuclear or conventional cruise missiles the full 15,000 kilometers with inflight refueling. Due to the swept-back design and ability to have prop tips over the speed of sound, this makes the plane effective for long-range patrol. Due to the prop tips over the speed of sound, the plane also possesses a very distinguishable very loud acoustic signature. Upgraded variants, the Tu-95MS, have improved avionics, latest radar, and electronic countermeasures, making the platform effective well into the 21st century for missile strikes and reconnaissance missions.

Of the bombers, the most capable Russian fourth-generation++ fighter is the Su-35 Flanker-E. Aside from the external similarity to the Su-27, the Su-35 has an entirely new airframe design, thrust-vectoring engines, and an upgraded avionics package with multi-role capability. Due to extreme maneuverability and over-range air-to-air combat traits, the fighter is the ultimate escort ship for strategical bombers by enemy skies.

The intercept was dependent greatly on the E-3 Sentry AWACS, Boeing 707-based aircraft with a rotodome giving 360-degree coverage out to 250 miles. The E-3 has the ability to track up to 600 airborne targets at the same time, including low-flying targets that would be immune to ground-based radar. The onboard communications, comprising VHF/UHF radios, satellite links, and Link 16 data networks, enable the platform to coordinate intercepts in near-real time, dispatching fighters to the best positions for engagement while retaining situational awareness over enormous sectors of airspace.

Aiding the mission were KC-135 Stratotankers, the workhorses of the U. S. air-to-air refueling since the late 1950s. Capable of off-loading hundreds of thousands of pounds of gas inflight, KC-135s provide fighters and surveillance planes expanded combat reach so patrols over remote areas such as the Aleutian Islands and Arctic approaches can be sustained. Up-to-the-minute upgrades, such as glass cockpits, satellite communications, and infrared countermeasures, make the KC-135 effective even under the worst conditions.

While NORAD also said Russian activity within the Alaskan ADIZ is normal and “not viewed as a threat,” this type of flight is broadly interpreted as an allied test of alertness. The ADIZ, from around 12 nautical miles off the coast, demands all air traffic to identify itself for national security reasons. There also had been Russian flights before, most recently this past August, including an Il-20 reconnaissance platform intercepted despite repeated instances seen within the zone.

The timing of this most recent encounter comes amidst the greatest tension in Europe. Just weeks before, three Russian MiG-31 fighters flew into Estonia’s airspace above the Gulf of Finland for 12 minutes, despite their deafening their communication with the Italian F-35 interceptors from NATO, before only being forced out. Estonia’s Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna described the incursion as “unprecedentedly brazen” and one belonging to “Russia’s increasingly broad testing of boundaries.” Estonia invoked Article 4 from NATO, whose consultations this prompted as well as an alert from the Secretary General from NATO, Mark Rutte, whose actions Russia was “escalatory.”

These exercises are evidence for the need for frontier monitoring and intercepting platforms to maintain the integrity of the airspace. The cooperation between legacy strategic bombers like the Tu-95, newest fighters like the Su-35, and the coordinated response from NORAD’s E-3, F-16s, and KC-135s is evidence for Cold War technologies’ enduring nature alongside the newest technologies positioned to counter them. As the airspace intrusions over the peak altitude of the NATO countries like Estonia and Poland have already triggered military as well as diplomatic responses, the demonstration of operational capability over Alaska is as much one for deterrence as defense.”
