As Ukraine War Rages On, Russia Confronts Potential Shortages in Key Military Hardware

The fighting in Ukraine, characterized by intense and sustained battles, is causing unprecedented Russian military drawdown, particularly of Soviet-era equipment. With the war ongoing, indications are that Russia is exhausting its famous caches of tanks, guns, and armored vehicles, and fears are being raised about the Russian military’s future capabilities.

The Kremlin, which has suffered enormous battlefield losses, has been resorting to dipping heavily into its stockpiles, previously full of Soviet-era arms, in order to fuel its offensive. These old stockpiles, remnants of the Cold War, have been a lifeline for Russian troops for a long time as they suffer heavy losses against Ukrainian forces supported by the West.

Russian President Vladimir Putin’s overtures, offering strategic arms and space dialogue for an end to the hostilities, suggest a change in strategy motivated by shrinking military resources. The nuclear blackmail toward the United States and its allies is a part of this framework, as presented in Putin’s offer. However, the so-called “Korean Scenario” being promoted by the Kremlin a ceasefire keeping occupied territories under control may be a sign of desperation from Russia since their storage bases for weapons remain under persistent depletion.

These bases’ depletion will probably make Russia lose its offensive capacity by 2025, if Ukraine can sustain high combat intensity and the West keeps pouring military aid. “Russia cannot replenish these arms and material,” meaning Russia’s conventional military threat could become more confined, not only to Ukraine but also to other countries.

Before this looming fatigue, the Russian military behavior in the Ukrainian front might be even more volatile and unpredictable in nature than in other arenas, such as outer space. In this light, it is absolutely necessary for the Western powers to grant Ukraine major and unshakeable assistance, in the form of arms supply, so that they can resist Russian belligerence and safeguard Europe and other nations.

The harsh realities of war and the stretch on military inventories have led US intelligence officials to anticipate a gloomy future for Russian military capabilities. The director of the Defense Intelligence Agency has signaled it may take as long as 10 years for Russian forces to overcome the degradations of war. The estimates go from five to 10 years based on how sanctions affect them and their ability to put technology back into their force, again emphasizing the long-term effects of the war.

As Russian troops are now “relying on reserve [troops] and reserve equipment, older, Soviet-era kinds of [equipment,]” the conflict in Ukraine has not only been a vicious grinding war of attrition but also a turning point that can determine Russia’s military position for many years. Though the conflict’s destiny is uncertain, there is one certainty: the shadow of Soviet-era power is quickly fading on today’s battlefield, and Russia and the world must deal with the repercussions.
