The Best Contemporary .45 ACP Pistols Reliable Choices Beyond the M1911

When discussing the .45 ACP, it’s difficult to ignore its past. It’s a cartridge used in large wars, from World War I to Vietnam, and made history as a round that could bring danger to a stop in its tracks. But technology advances by cartridges over the last few years have brought about a renaissance of the .45 ACP, with new firearms released as recently as April of 2023.

Even where other commonly available calibers become a possibility, the .45 ACP remains the choice for most shooters, especially those savoring pure power and the natural confidence engendered by its battle-proven performance. Its large-diameter bullet, of course, is well-suited as a subsonic cartridge, being adaptable with barrel lengths from various configurations.

Added to the new .45 ACP pistol models are such as the Smith & Wesson M&P 45 Shield M2.0, an excellent carry piece for everyday concealed carry. Featuring an aggressive texture grip and stainless steel, it is both reliable and accurate. For DA/SA design, the Sig Sauer P220 Legion remains an excellent pick, featuring its P-SAIT trigger system and day/night high-visibility sights.

Walther’s PPQ .45 ACP is close behind with its superb ergonomics and trigger setup enabling fast, accurate shots. Second place belongs to the ubiquitous Glock 21 Gen 4, a full-size striker-fired pistol engineered for reliability and versatility. Heckler & Koch’s USP 45 Tactical is close behind, printing sub-2-inch groups at 25 yards thanks to its match-grade trigger and accuracy barrel.

No inventory would be complete without revolvers, and the Ruger Redhawk .45 ACP/.45 Colt revolver is an exercise in the flexibility of the .45 ACP cartridge on other gun platforms. It has a heavy frame and no side plates, and as such it is very rugged and smooth to handle in recoil.

Wrapping up tactical models, the FN FNX-45 Tactical screams “tacticool,” having a kit that is standard with a threaded barrel and suppressor-height sights. A mention must also be made of the SAR K2, which flies under the radar with a staggering 14+1 capacity, adopting features of the CZ 75 and 97 series with its slide-in-frame design.

Interestingly, the Hi-Point JHP 45, frequently belittled for its cheap and practical looks, is a shooter and attracts a loyal following for one who wants a practical .45 ACP weapon.
