“If Russia keeps attacking Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, there will be a ‘blackout in Moscow,” President Volodymyr Zelenskyy threatened at the beginning of this week. Hours later, Ukrainian forces showed the extent of that threat, launching a coordinated nighttime attack that struck deep into Russian territory, destroying key energy infrastructure, naval equipment, and missile facilities.

The farthest and most economically impactful blow fell on Kirishinefteorgsintez oil refinery in the Leningrad area, over 800 kilometers from Ukraine’s border. With a yearly processing capacity of 18.4 million tons nearly 6.6 percent of Russia’s overall volume of oil refining the plant is among Russia’s largest and a major hub in its fuel supply system. Video shared by the independent Russian broadcaster Astra captured a huge explosion followed by fire blazing into the night sky. Regional Governor Alexander Drozdenko confirmed the drone attack and stated air defenses shot down seven UAVs before the fire was brought under control. This refinery has been hit repeatedly, including attacks in September and March that briefly reduced output by almost half, according to open-source intelligence. Analysts point out that Russia’s refining system does have excess primary distillation capacity, but continued attacks on second-stage processing units can progressively cut into fuel production, something already seen in a 10 percent drop in gasoline production nationwide.
In Lake Onega in Karelia, Ukraine targeted a rare and symbolically charged site: the Buyan-M class small missile ship Grad. The ship, which carries Kalibr cruise missiles, belongs to Russia’s Project 21631 class small, shallow-draft warships that are intended for coastal defense and accurate attacks on ground and naval targets. The 74-meter-long, 950-tonne-displacement Buyan-M combines stealth shaping with a vertical launch system for firing missiles with ranges of over 1,500 kilometers. The Grad was said to have been in transit between the Baltic and Caspian Sea through Russia’s inland waterways when it was attacked, highlighting Ukraine’s capacity to target naval assets distant from open seas. Partial incapacitation would be enough to throw a wrench into Russia’s missile deployment timetables, damage assessments are still being made.
In Russia’s Kursk province, Ukrainian forces attacked two prized battlefield systems: a 1L122 Garmon radar complex and an Iskander missile system transport-loading vehicle. The Garmon radar, offered in portable (E1) and truck-mounted (E2) configurations, offers short- to medium-range air surveillance, monitoring aircraft, drones, and artillery rounds. Its mobility and small size make it an important sensor for forward-deployed troops. Disabling such a radar deteriorates local air defense coordination, creating gaps that can be exploited by Ukrainian strike drones and artillery.
The Iskander system, 9K720, is a short-range ballistic missile road-mobile platform with a maximum range of 500 kilometers. The targeted transporter-loader vehicle is critical for reloading the launcher units in the field. In its absence, missile batteries would have to depend on slower, less mobile resupply options, lowering their operational tempo. The Iskander’s inertial navigation and optical terminal-guided missiles have been a backbone of Russia’s deep-strike capability against Ukrainian infrastructure. The destruction of its logistical components is a deliberate attempt to degrade such capability without necessarily targeting the heavily protected launchers themselves.
The same night, Ukrainian forces struck the command post of Russia’s 8th Army in occupied Donetsk. This headquarters coordinates operations across a broad sector of the front, and its disruption could ripple through Russian command-and-control networks. While the extent of the damage remains under review, such strikes often force command elements to relocate, interrupting communications and slowing decision-making during active operations.
The scope of these strikes indicates an evolution in Ukraine’s long-range strike policy. Improvements in the duration of drone flights, payload, and guidance enable Kyiv to target sites previously out of range. As stated by Ukrainian military releases, the campaign is intended to “systematically destroy Russian military facilities and weaken its military-economic potential,” prioritizing fuel depots, weapons manufacturing, and battlefield sensors. Russian refineries, which have been struggling from previous waves of attacks, are now installing makeshift anti-drone defenses like netting over exposed processing units. Though some of these countermeasures have been effective in Ukrainian defensive configurations, the extent and the frequency of Ukrainian raids test Russia’s capacity to safeguard every key facility.
From the Leningrad refinery blazes to the hobbled warship at Karelia and the crippled missile support equipment at Kursk, the newest operation illustrates not only geographic scope but technical accuracy in target selection. Each strike fits into a larger strategy: limiting Russia’s capacity to project power, maintain its troops, and protect its own space from the type of distant warfare it has perpetrated against Ukraine.
