A warship built to make precision attacks thousands of kilometers from home was struck deep within Russian borders raising pressing concerns about the vulnerability of Moscow’s land-based naval assets.

At 04:31 a.m. on October 4, Ukrainian Special Operations Forces attacked the Russian Grad, a Project 21631 Buyan-M-class river-sea small missile ship, on Lake Onega in the Republic of Karelia. The ship’s engine room was struck hard on its starboard side while underway from the Baltic to the Caspian, a redeployment route made possible by the river-sea design of the vessel. The novel inland strike showcases Kyiv’s increasing operational reach as well as the precision of its asymmetric warfare capabilities.
The Buyan-M class a dozen warships built between 2014 and 2025 is suitable for operation in sea coasts and riverine inland waterways. The Zelenodolsk Design Bureau built these corvettes, which have a displacement of 949 tons, are 74.1 meters long, and just 2.6 meters in draught so that they could move through rivers, canals, and locks. They are powered by a CODAD (combined diesel and diesel) system, with later ships having Russian-produced Kolomna 16D49 diesels after sanctions ended the availability of German MTU engines. The Grad, which entered commission in December 2022, is one of the most recent of the series.
The weaponry is stuffed into the UKSK 3S14 universal vertical launch system, which holds eight cells that launch 3M55 Oniks, 3M14 Kalibr-NK, and possibly 3M22 Tsirkon hypersonic cruise missiles. The Kalibr-NK land-attack version has a range of 1,500 to 2,500 kilometers, and the anti-ship version hits naval targets at 500 kilometers. The Oniks contributes supersonic anti-ship capability, and the Tsirkon available since 2023 combines hypersonic speed with agility to challenge missile defenses.
These corvettes were among the first Russian ships at sea to use Kalibr missiles in combat, launching 26 from the Caspian Sea against Syrian targets in 2015. They have been a regular fixture in Russia’s long-range strikes on Ukraine since 2022, usually hitting energy facilities. The Grad‘s destruction removes, if only temporarily, one of the Kremlin’s land-based missile launch pads, reducing its ability to make deep strikes out of protected waterways.
Offensively, Buyan-M ships have some drawbacks. The air defense includes an AK-630M-2 Duet point-defense gun platform two six-barrel 30mm rotary cannons and two 3M-47 Gibka launcher packs for Igla-S or Verba MANPADs. The system, on the basis of the Pozitiv-M1 radar, is adequate against unmanned aerial vehicles but insufficient against current anti-ship missiles or co-ordinated air attacks. Installations to fit the Pantsir-M system, such as on Project 22800 Karakurt corvettes, never happened. Seaworthiness is restricted to the extent they are unable to operate effectively in over Beaufort Force 5 conditions, and their operational life is restricted to ten days with a 2,500 nautical-mile range at 12 knots.
The mounting of the Kalibr system on small vessels like the Buyan-M is reflective of Russia’s tactic of giving minimal ships strategic reach. As one top Russian defense industry official noted in 2011, “KALIBR provides even modest platforms, such as corvettes, with significant offensive capability… all platforms have a significant ability to hold distant fixed ground targets at risk using conventional warheads.” It is designed to be modular in order to allow for use from ships, submarines, and potentially mobile coastal launchers, which increases flexibility in theaters ranging from the Black Sea to the Pacific.
Ukraine’s land-based assault on Lake Onega shows that even ships shielded away from controversial seas are still legitimate targets for modern long-range and drones. Kyiv’s increasingly sophisticated counter-drone doctrine already accountable for decimating Russian radar capabilities and forcing the relocation of Black Sea Fleet assets now found its application against a river-sea class warship in home waters. The coming together of precision targeting, operational intelligence, and weapon delivery in this case is a significant change in Ukraine’s ability to strike from the sea, one that can alter the math for Russia’s use of inland naval axes and corvettes with missile capability.
