Could one missile salvo change a country’s air defence strategy? In India’s Operation Sindoor last month, Russia-supplied S-400 Triumf surface-to-air missile systems did what defence experts think is the longest-range surface-to-air kill ever it shot down a Pakistani Airborne Early Warning and Control (AEW&C) aircraft from an estimated 300 kilometres away. It was not only a tactical success; it was a demonstration of technology that is now changing the Indian Air Force’s procurement priorities.

The intercept happened in the middle of a four-day close-to-war between India and Pakistan, triggered by a Pahalgam terrorist attack. While the larger conflict involved waves of standoff strikes, drone battles, and precision missile raids, the S-400’s intercept was notable for its strategic value. AEW&C platforms, sometimes referred to as “eyes in the sky,” play a vital role in contemporary air warfare, offering radar coverage and command coordination for fleets of fighters. Neutralising one at such a distance showed the system’s capability to penetrate deep into contested airspace without endangering manned aircraft.
Russia’s Almaz Central Design Bureau produced the S-400 Triumf, which incorporates a layered missile suite short-range 9M96E, medium-range 9M96E2, long-range 48N6DM, and the very long-range 40N6 with the capability to target targets as far as 400 km away and at altitudes of 30 km. Its 91N6E Big Bird acquisition radar and 92N6E Grave Stone engagement radar components of its radar complex can simultaneously track as many as 36 targets. During Operation Sindoor, these were integrated into India’s Integrated Air Command and Control System (IACCS) and allowed for quick target detection and engagement amid the fog of war.
India’s initial $5.43 billion 2018 contract for five S-400 regiments contained a follow-on provision for as many as five additional regiments at the same base price, plus inflation. Four regiments are already commissioned, and the fifth is on the way by early 2026. Following Sindoor’s success, the IAF is now looking to add three additional S-400 squadrons and, more boldly, two squadrons of the successor-generation S-500 “Prometheus.”
The S-500 is an advancement in intercept capacity. Intended to engage intercontinental ballistic missiles, hypersonic glide vehicles, and stealth fighters like the F-35, it has a reported maximum range of 600 km and altitude reach into near-space at 200 km. Its missile family includes the 77N6-N and 77N6-N1 for anti-ballistic missions and the 40N6M for far-end air defence. A multi-level set of radars 91N6A(M) acquisition, 96L6-TsP tracking, and 76T6/77T6 engagement radars offers 360-degree coverage and simultaneous tracking of several ballistic targets at velocities up to Mach 20. Russian sources even say that the S-500 is able to neutralise low-Earth orbit satellites, adding a space warfare dimension.
Procuring the S-500 won’t be easy. Russia’s production capacity is constrained, with its own Aerospace Forces as a priority, and unit prices in the range of $700 million to $2.5 billion. Indian planners are considering co-production or technology transfer to reduce costs and geopolitical risk. Strategic calculations are straightforward: integrating S-500s would extend India’s defensive bubble against the most sophisticated threats, including Chinese and Pakistani missile capabilities.
This growth complements India’s pursuit of self-sufficiency in air defence. Both S-400 and S-500 systems are scheduled to be integrated into Project Kusha, an indigenous long-range SAM network being developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) in partnership with Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) from 2030. Project Kusha plans to achieve a 350 km range of engagement, countering aircraft, drones, and missiles using a home-developed radar and control architecture. BEL chairman Manoj Jain has confirmed joint development of several subsystems including phased-array radars of advanced vintage with a prototype to be achieved in 12–18 months and testing to be complete in three years.
The experience from Operation Sindoor will guide Kusha’s design. The S-400’s quick deployability, multi-target engagement, and integration into India’s command structures were the clinchers in countering Pakistani drone and missile attacks. Folding such operational learning into an indigenous platform could provide a system optimized for India’s local threat situation, with less dependence on foreign vendors yet without sacrifice in the latest technology.
For defence analysts, the AEW&C kill at 300 km is not just a statistic it is a case study in how one successful intercept can fuel procurement cycles, drive doctrinal change, and seed domestic innovation. As India prepares to layer up its Sudarshan Chakra air defence and develop the Prometheus and even further, the technological and strategic shockwaves from the one shot will keep reverberating through South Asia’s aerial security domain.
