In a conflict increasingly characterized by quick technological evolution, a revealing detail was reported this week: one of Moscow’s lowest-cost airborne platforms, a Russian Gerbera decoy drone, was captured carrying two rear-facing cameras a setup intended to detect and avoid Ukrainian first-person-view (FPV) interceptor drones. The video, aired by Ukraine’s Wu Samurai drone brigade, revealed the Gerbera’s unique propeller-powered body gliding over open fields, its sensors looking up and back. The intention was obvious: scan for threats from the sky or behind before they could get close.

The Gerbera, which costs an estimated $10,000 to manufacture, according to Ukrainian officials, is normally used as a decoy in large-scale wave attacks together with Iranian-designed Shahed loitering ammunition. These waves may total hundreds, with Russia firing 805 Shahed and decoy drones in one night last month. Whereas the Gerbera’s mission has tended to be saturation of Ukrainian air defenses, adding cameras in some models, artificial intelligence modules as well represents a move toward active evasiveness. With the Clear Sky program, Kyiv plans an annual capacity of 1 million interceptors, many tens of thousands of which have already been ordered. This large-scale rollout is to counter the sheer numbers of Shahed and Gerbera drones, which travel at the speeds of about 120 mph and increasingly at heights of more than 10,000 feet beyond the capability of truck-mounted machine guns. As President Volodymyr Zelensky recently pointed out, “Interceptor drones are performing especially well already hundreds of Russian-Iranian Shahed drones have been shot down this week.”
Russia’s countermeasures are adapting in tandem. Reconnaissance drones such as the Zala and Supercam increasingly have radio detectors for identifying incoming FPV interceptors’ control signals, prompting evasive dives or crippling video feed to disorient Ukrainian pilots. Machine-vision systems, coupled with rear-looking cameras, can self-start weaving or swerving actions. The Gerbera’s newest setup indicates these technologies are shaping up for miniaturization and employment even on low-cost aircraft.
The consequences go further than the battlegrounds of Ukraine. This month, Poland was the first NATO member state to down Russian drones in the war, such as Gerberas that invaded its airspace. NATO responded by sending multi-million-dollar equipment F-35 fighter aircraft, Patriot batteries, and surveillance planes to counter drones costing pennies on the dollar. Experts such as Ulrike Franke have cautioned that this is “not sustainable” and that the alliances need to deploy layered defenses with low-cost interceptors like Ukraine’s.
Technological spiral never stops. As Ukrainian operators adapt air-to-air interception techniques, Russia employs optical sensors, AI modules, and electronic warfare gadgets in even its most affordable drones. Each innovation compels the other hand to shift whether via enhanced pilot training, swarms of autonomous interceptors, or anti-jamming technology. For Ukraine watchers at NATO, the experience provides a model for fighting off swarms of low-cost drones without burning high-cost munitions. The Gerbera’s back-facing cameras are more than an addition to the battlefield; they are a sign that economics and engineering in drone warfare are in a constant evolution, with both sides competing to get one step ahead.
