“What happens when a $100 million fighter jet meets a $10,000 drone?” That question now looms over NATO’s eastern front after a Dutch F-35 Lightning II stealth fighter made a historic first shooting down Russian drones within alliance airspace.

The battle took place in the predawn hours between September 9 and 10, when Polish and NATO radar stations picked up several incoming aircraft from Ukraine and Belarus. Nineteen drones, some of which looked like the triangular delta-wing Geran or Gerbera one-way attack varieties, invaded Polish airspace for a seven-hour duration. Airports such as Warsaw Chopin, Rzeszów-Jasionka key to military support to Ukraine and Lublin temporarily closed. NATO deployed Polish F-16s and Dutch F-35As from Poznan Krzesiny Air Base, along with Italian airborne command platforms and German Patriot missile batteries. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has said that “a huge number” of the drones entered Poland, with several of them being shot down by NATO aircraft, the first destruction of Russian assets over a NATO country since 2022.
The Royal Netherlands Air and Space Force confirmed its F-35A detachment opened fire, later releasing images of a drone-shaped kill marking stenciled beneath the cockpit canopy. The marking, echoing a tradition dating back to World War I, depicts a Shahed-type silhouette symbolizing the victory and commemorating a moment when fifth-generation stealth met low-cost unmanned systems in combat.
Technically, the F-35A is built for far more demanding threats. Its sensor fusion, low observable shaping, and weapons package such as the GAU-22/A 25 mm Gatling gun, AIM-9X Sidewinder, and AIM-120C AMRAAM are tailored to high-end air superiority and strike missions. However in this instance, it was called upon to intercept drones with a unit cost of approximately $10,000. The missiles fired at them are valued between $500,000 and $1 million per missile, highlighting what analysts refer to as the “wrong side of the cost curve” issue firing extravagant platforms and weapons against mass-produced, disposable targets.
The drones themselves form part of Russia’s growing unmanned force, many of which are connected with the advanced Rubicon Center of Unmanned Systems. Rubicon systems excel in reconnaissance, attack, and decoy operations, sometimes combining electronic warfare to blind or deceive defenses. In Ukraine, such systems have disrupted supply lines and obliterated armor, utilizing swarm attacks and hybrid payloads. The Polish variant of Gerbera is unarmed and operates as a decoy to attract fire and reveal defensive positions a tactic that also consumes costly NATO ammunition.
Strategically, the event was more than a border incursion. NATO officials consider it an intentional testing of alliance vigilance, gauging detection, response time, and rules of engagement. As one military commentator explained, Russia’s use of unarmed decoys skirted instant escalation but still picked up valuable intelligence. The low cost of the operation less than $200,000 for Russia compelled NATO to spend millions in fuel, missile intercepts, and sortie hours, while uncovering holes in layered drone defense.
This imbalance has fueled demands for the development of low-cost-per-shot systems. NATO’s Operation Eastern Sentry involves plans to send counter-drone sensors, electronic jamming, and directed-energy weapons to Poland’s border. Short- and medium-range radar, interceptor drones, and kinetic systems like Israel’s Iron Dome are needed to defeat swarms, experts say, without bankrupting the defender. As Council on Foreign Relations’ Liana Fix noted, “It does not make sense for NATO to respond with missiles that could cost $1 million or more per shot or fighter jets that could cost $50,000 per flight hour.”
The larger picture is a transformation of warfare under which unmanned platforms are able to take out high-value targets. In Ukraine, low-cost FPV drones have blown up tanks costing millions, and Russia’s sophisticated Su-57 stealth fighter was taken out by a small drone attack when parked. This type of asymmetry disrupts conventional procurement cycles and doctrines, calling for agile, distributed command arrangements and quick assimilation of counter-drone operations.
For the time being, the Netherlands F-35’s kill marking is both a sign of NATO determination and a threat. In contemporary air defense, victory could be quantified in terms not only of the capability to shoot down an intruder, but of doing so without serving the attacker’s economic and tactical advantage.
