How does a warplane move from battlefield triumphs to being the most devastated type of plane in a war? The Sukhoi Su-34 “Fullback” provides an example of how design positives can be compromised by maturing threats and operational realities.

Based on the maneuverable Su-27 “Flanker,” the Su-34 was designed as a long-range, twin-seat strike aircraft with the bombling capacity of a bomber and the agility of a fighter. Its side-by-side cockpit, unusual in today’s high-speed jets, enhances crew coordination on sophisticated missions, and a titanium-plated capsule shields both pilots. The plane’s unique “platypus” nose mounts the Leninets V004 passive electronically scanned array radar, specifically designed for ground and sea attack, with back-up from the Platan electro-optical targeting system. With a maximum takeoff weight of 45,100 kg, 12 hardpoints, and a capacity to carry as much as 15 tons of ordnance, the Fullback is capable of delivering guided bombs such as the KAB-500L, air-to-air missiles such as the R-77, and air-to-ground missiles such as the Kh-59.
In Syria since 2015, the Su-34 demonstrated its capabilities under relatively lenient skies. It obliterated fortified strongpoints, command posts, and on October 4, 2017, assisted by Su-35 escorts, killed 12 Al-Nusra leaders and 50 fighters. Precision-guided ordnance, such as GLONASS-guided KAB-500S-E bombs, permitted strikes from altitudes of about 15,000 feet, keeping the aircraft away from short-range threats. The endurance of the aircraft ferry range of 4,500 km with air refueling made it possible to maintain operations far from home bases.
Ukraine provided a vastly different landscape. Advanced integrated air defense systems (IADS), such as Patriot batteries, NASAMS, and modified Soviet-era S-300P, formed dense, layered defenses. Russian strategy responded by converting Su-34 missions into standoff glide-bomb attacks with UMPK kits on FAB-500 and FAB-1500 bombs, enabling release beyond medium-range SAM envelopes. But these solutions decreased precision in urban fights and did not remove losses. Ukrainian sources and independent monitors indicate 37-41 Su-34s destroyed, damaged, or abandoned since February of 2022, ranging from combat shootdowns to friendly fire like the July 2022 Russian air defenses’ downing of a Fullback over Alchevsk.
Attrition has been added to by Ukrainian deep-strike drone operations. The June 2024 “Spider Web” attack struck several Russian airfields, destroying Su-34s at Marinovka and damaging others at Morosovsk, hundreds of kilometers behind the front. In August 2025, Ukrainian Special Operations reported destroying four Su-34s at Marinovka, a base 400 km from Ukraine. These attacks take advantage of the aircraft’s weakness on the ground, where its size and characteristic silhouette render it hard to hide.
Operational tempo is another consideration. Russian Aerospace Forces (VKS) have conducted high sortie rates up to 150 a day in an offensive environment spedding up wear. RAND estimates 60 “imputed losses” a year of sheer overuse, or the equivalent of 26 new airframes, while Su-30, Su-34, and Su-35 combined production is only around 20 yearly. The average age of the fleet combined with the restricted remaining airframe life further imparts strategic stress.
Moscow’s response has been to increase production of the upgraded Su-34M. Produced in the Novosibirsk Aviation Production Association, the production has almost doubled to 30 per annum, supported by Chinese-imported electronics. The Su-34M combines modular reconnaissance pods in the Sych program, new avionics, and more advanced electronic warfare capabilities. Variants are electronic attack and ISR versions, increasing mission versatility. Algeria is set to become the first export customer, with desert-painted Su-34Ms on the production line to replace its Su-24M force, providing a cheap strike platform for less than $10 million per aircraft.
Despite these upgrades, the Fullback remains non-stealth and susceptible to modern IADS. Survivability hinges on staying outside high-threat zones, leveraging escorts like the Su-35, and maximizing standoff weapon employment. In Syria, range, payload, and crew protection defined its success. In Ukraine, those same traits have kept it relevant but at a steep cost in airframes and crews.
