What the Conservative Revolt Against Marjorie Taylor Greene Reveals About the GOP

The wind seems to be changing against Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene among conservative media sources, a rare break for a figure who has been one of the most contentious and outspoken figures within the Republican Party. But recent actions by Greene, such as her failed bid to cut off aid to Ukraine and a quixotic bid against House Speaker Mike Johnson, have resulted in her facing criticism from quarters of the conservative press that may previously have been more inclined to support her.

Greene has been under attack within her own party since threatening to lead a ouster against House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.). If her effort makes it to the floor, though, there are indications Democrats might come in and assist in saving Johnson.

The Murdoch-owned New York Post, normally a safe haven for conservative opinion, put Greene on its cover not in victory but under the biting sobriquet “Moscow Marjorie”. The paper joins a larger trend of criticism by right-wing media personalities for Greene’s recent behavior.

Greene’s polarizing methods have become so egregious that even foreign commentators are starting to take notice. Ironically, her position on Ukrainian aid has won her admiration from Russian state media, with one TV host hailing her as “a real beauty” and “demonstrably straight,” remarks more befitting oneupmanship than substantive political debate. Such plaudits from hostile overseas media do little to enhance her reputation at home.

Permanent funding for Ukraine is what they desire and Mike Johnson will provide it for them, Greene declared Sunday in a message on the social media site X, addressed to Ukrainian leadership and the Biden administration. “Peace is not available to them because it does not fit the government appropriations war business and economic model, which is vile and disgusting.”

Even with Greene’s continuous beef with Republicans such as Rep. Lauren Boebert and her repetition of Russian talking points regarding Ukraine, House Speaker Mike Johnson’s successful approval of Ukraine aid demonstrates his ability to work around and deflect Greene’s threats, even for a GOP that holds a narrow majority in the House.
