NBA legend Chris Paul was thrown out of the March 23rd game for criticizing referee Tony Brothers. At a climax of the game between the Golden State Warriors and the Indiana Pacers, the ejection of Paul indicated the team’s frustration in battling a playoff spot.
The ejection occurred at the end of the game with the Warriors losing and ultimately beaten 123-111 by the Pacers. Paul’s first technical foul came as a result of him calling Brothers a “TikToker,” which seemed to get under the official’s skin. The exchange led to Paul being charged with a second technical foul when he commented on Brothers’ authoritative presence, saying, “That’s too much power.”
Paul explained the exchange in the post-game news conference, stating, Old Tony. He talking to me, I talked back. I called him a TikToker, and I got a tech. That was the first one. I just said, ‘TikToker,’ gave me a tech. Second one, I just said that’s too much power. He gave me another tech. He was visibly annoyed in discussing the power struggles on the court.
Fuel to the fire, Paul shared a video of Brothers from one of his old interviews on his Instagram story. Brothers’ own words, “I don’t even really care too much for basketball,” were put into contrast with his role as referee and his confession of desiring to be a judge rather than to engage in the sport he is refereeing.
The Warriors’ recent streak has been rollercoaster-esque, and the game was no different. They sport a 36-33 record and are precariously sitting at 10th position in the Western Conference standings, ahead of the reinvigorated Houston Rockets for the play-in position. The Warriors are under pressure to provide a decent finish to the regular season. Chris Paul’s ejection is his eighth in a 19-year career, which suggests the occasional but hot-tempered altercations that may ensue between NBA players and umpires.
