“Has your iPhone been running out of juice faster than usual this week?” That’s what many Apple users have been wondering since upgrading to iOS 26, which rolled out Monday. Complaints of battery life dropping by up to 50% in just 90 minutes of normal use have circulated in the forums, raising alarm. Apple, though, says the phenomenon is temporary and predicted.

As per the support documentation of the company, “This is normal, as your device needs time to complete the setup process in the background, including indexing data and files for search, downloading new assets, and updating apps.” These processes following the update are resource-intensive. Background indexing, for instance, scans and indexes the entire file system so that Spotlight search, Siri suggestions, and Photos’ object recognition work instantly. On contemporary iPhones, this indexing is multi-threaded and is performed at low priority, yet the sheer amount of data particularly on phones with years of accumulated messages, photos, and app data can cause substantial CPU and storage activity, pulling in more power and producing more heat.
This is why users also see their phones become hotter within the initial 24 to 72 hours of updating. As one AppleInsider review observes, thermal performance suffers in the short term because these background functions execute alongside regular user activity. The impact is greater when resource-intensive activities such as gaming, video watching, or camera usage are exercised, bringing A-series chipsets to their heat thresholds. Though iPhones have built-in protection against overheat, Apple continues to recommend avoiding those situations that trap heat like charging a device under a pillow during this time.
Traditionally, battery performance calms down within one to three days once indexing and asset downloads are finished. But iOS 26 also adds new features that can quietly alter long-term battery dynamics. First among these is Optimized Battery Charging, which has now been augmented with a lock screen indicator showing an estimate of time to full charge. When Optimized Charging is on, it displays the time to an 80% level, chosen to minimize lithium-ion cell wear. It can also be seen in Settings > Battery, where Apple has reworked the interface to show weekly usage averages, daily screen-on/off time, and per-app consumption.
The second big addition is Adaptive Power Mode, a part of the Apple Intelligence family. Found exclusively on iPhone 15 Pro and later, this feature employs device-based machine learning to anticipate when additional battery life will be required based on recent activity. As Apple puts it, Adaptive Power Mode “uses on-device intelligence to predict when you’ll need extra battery life… and then adjusts as needed to help your battery last longer that day.” Changes might involve reducing display brightness by 3%, constraining background activity, and turning on Low Power Mode automatically at 20% charge. In contrast to the blunt nature of traditional Low Power Mode, Adaptive Power Mode runs continuously in the background and only jumps in when high drain occurs for example, in long video recording or heavy gaming sessions without slowing down in tasks that demand top speed.
The feature is reminiscent of adaptive battery management elsewhere, but in Apple’s case, it makes use of the Neural Engine to locally calculate behavioral models, keeping data private and reducing latency in making decisions. The compromise is that the predictive power of the feature relies on the quality of recent usage, so it can take days or weeks to completely “learn” a user’s habits following an update.
For those feeling the latest drain, Apple’s recommendation is simple: charge the device more often over the next few days, and if prolonged uptime is important like on a trip or at work gatherings have a portable battery pack handy. Waiting for the update is a possibility, but it is to delay not just these new battery features, but also necessary security fixes.
While certain iOS 26 features will always demand more processing capacity and therefore a little extra power the early uptick in griping is mainly an artifact of the update’s behind-the-scenes realignment. After the background load recedes, most people should find their iPhones getting back to routine stamina, now with greater nuance for how that energy is allocated.
