For years, smart glasses have promised to place the digital world in front of our eyes, but the experience has generally been clunkier, bulkier, and much less fashionable than the vision. This week at Connect 2025, Meta is set to unveil what might be its most compelling bid to make wearable augmented reality mainstream.
The firm’s new eyewear generation, internally referred to as Hypernova, is a major step forward from the 2023 Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses. While the previous versions combined cameras, speakers, and microphones into traditional frames, Hypernova includes a tiny, integrated display a monocular heads-up display (HUD) that can display navigation directions, translations, text messages, and interactions with the Meta AI assistant. Unlike AR headsets, this screen doesn’t ground virtual objects to the real world, a design option that dispenses with the use of clunky depth sensors or motion-tracking hardware, retaining the form factor near normal eyewear.
The screen is just half of the story. Meta is combining the glasses with an electromyography (EMG) wristband that picks up the faint electrical signals from the muscles of the wearer and uses them to enable control via finger taps, pinches, and swipes. The tech, first shown in combination with Meta’s Orion AR prototype last year, enables unobtrusive, tactile interaction without the need for voice command or over-the-top gestures. As CNET’s Scott Stein reported after experimenting with an older prototype, “it worked surprisingly well,” with some amount of responsiveness that might make it a workable daily input means.
From a hardware standpoint, the jump from earlier models is considerable. The Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses already surpassed their ancestors with twin 12-megapixel cameras, 32GB of onboard storage, a five-microphone setup, and speakers 50 percent louder than before all for the same $299 starting point. Hypernova, though, will likely ring in at about $800, a nod to the inclusion of the display and neural wristband, and to Meta’s desire to see it be a bridge between current camera-enabled eyewear and the fully immersive Orion AR glasses still in prototype.
Battery life has also been a priority. The 2023 Meta version of Ray-Ban provided some four hours of cross-use battery life, and a charging case for eight more charges an improvement over the original Ray-Ban Stories’ three hours of runtime and three extra charges. While Meta has not made public Hypernova’s specific endurance, the additional power requirements of the HUD and wristband will challenge the company to juggle performance with mobility.
The launch arrives during a critical earnings moment for Meta’s Reality Labs unit, which posted almost $70 billion in operating losses since late 2020. Smart glasses are viewed as a more viable near-term wager by analysts than VR headsets, which stay niche. “At this point, the glasses are going to be much more impactful and more mass market,” said Justin Post, an internet research analyst at Bank of America Securities. Sales of the Meta Smart Glasses from Ray-Ban have already surpassed more than three times year-over-year, as per EssilorLuxottica’s report in July, providing Meta with a rare hardware win to capitalize on.
The competitive environment is changing as well. Apple is working on its own glasses project, and Google announced a $150 million deal with Warby Parker to manufacture smart glasses. Meta’s head start in getting AI into wearable form factors may be a differentiator, particularly if, as Post theorized, “it really could be a better portal for AI than even phones” when it’s done well.
But the dangers are real. At $800, Hypernova will be priced more than twice that of the Ray-Ban Meta glasses, and Meta is said to be having low internal sales expectations. Success will not only rely on hardware popularity but also on establishing a healthy developer ecosystem to build interesting applications for the display and wristband interface. As Anshel Sag, lead analyst at Moor Insights & Strategy, noted, “I think a single display is a move in the right direction and would help build an ecosystem of apps.”
For Meta, the debut is about more than a new product launch it is an experiment of whether the firm is able to take years of research, billions of investment, and a series of reception-divided devices and convert them into a platform that redefines personal computing. The frames are certainly familiar-looking, but the tech within them is intended to revolutionize how and where we engage with the digital universe.
