What it takes for a 322,500-pound plane to fly fast and low like a fighter. At Airshow London SkyDrive 2025, the U.S. Air Force’s KC-135 Stratotanker provided the answer in a performance that combined brute power, sophisticated aerodynamics, and decades of engineering progress.

Between Sept. 5 and 7, teams from the 97th Air Mobility Wing at Altus Air Force Base flew the Stratotanker into London International Airport in Ontario, performing high-speed passes, slow-flight maneuvers, and an overhead flyover. These demonstrations, as much an eyesore as they were, were also a technical display of the aircraft’s operational versatility. “We have the ability to reach anywhere in the world at any given time,” stated Capt. Ryan Albers, flight commander of the 54th Air Refueling Squadron. “By doing these demonstrations in front of the public and especially with our partner nations, we further cement the fact that we can get personnel and equipment to the places they need to go through air mobility.”
The KC-135’s capability to carry out such diverse flight profiles is based on its engineering. Derived from the Boeing 367-80 prototype, the Stratotanker’s swept wing and high-mounted horizontal stabilizer, coupled with four turbofan engines, provide it with the thrust and aerodynamic stability to operate over a broad speed envelope. Though not an aerobatic aircraft, its high wing area and strong control surfaces provide tight, precise handling at both low and high speeds essential for air-to-air refueling, where stable flight in tight formation is a top priority. The slow-flight maneuver performed at the air show was a demonstration of the tanker’s capability to continue controlled lift when flying at lower airspeeds, a characteristic of its cambered wing design optimized for subsonic cruising but able to provide adequate lift margin in high-drag configuration.
Offstage, the Stratotanker’s longevity is the result of much modernization. The fleet has been equipped with Global Air Traffic Management-compliant avionics under the PACER CRAG program, with the ability to access international airspace without restriction under changing separation and altitude regulations. Corrosion, historically KC-135’s most chronic structural threat, is now controlled by the Coral Reach program, applying predictive data to anticipate and treat susceptible areas during depot maintenance. As Air Mobility Command leaders have indicated, these actions have “turned the corner” on structural decline, enabling the aircraft to stay in service well past its initial design life.
London’s performance was more than a show of equipment it was also a declaration of binational interoperability. Airshow London’s roster, featuring the Canadian Forces Snowbirds, the U.S. Air Force F-22 Raptor Demonstration Team, and the U.S. Navy F/A-18 Super Hornet, emphasized the coming together of U.S. and Canadian airpower. “From heavy airlifters and tankers to cutting-edge fighters and national demonstration teams, it gives the public a complete picture of what airpower looks like today,” Gerry Vanderhoek, director of air operations for the show, said. The KC-135’s purpose in this environment is strategic: it stretches fighter and bomber range and endurance, supporting extended combat over large distances a requirement particularly pertinent to Arctic and transatlantic operations where U.S.-Canadian cooperation is critical.
Aerodynamically, Stratotanker performance at the event also underscored the difficulty of maneuvering a massive military aircraft in tight airspace. In contrast to lightweight aerobatic aircraft with symmetrical airfoils meant for inverted maneuvers, the KC-135 uses its high-lift cambered wing and powerful engines to make its tight altitude and speed changes. The thrust-to-weight ratio, though modest in comparison to fighters, is adequate to support climb rates and acceleration that are impressive when combined with its size. The large control surfaces of the tanker, especially its rudder and inboard ailerons, provide stable roll and yaw control on low-altitude passes essential for keeping safety margins when in front of a live crowd.
The demonstration also had a recruitment mission. “The next heavy aircraft pilot or enlisted aircrew is always amongst the crowd, and our goal is to ignite that inspiration,” Albers said. For Air Mobility Command, public engagement is not spectacle alone it is about maintaining the human capital that powers operating and keeping a fleet of aircraft driving global U.S. military reach. With upcoming tanker programs such as the KC-Z on the horizon, and conceptual exploration into stealth, autonomy, and even combined wing body designs, airshow attendees today may become tomorrow’s engineers and aviators who will develop the next generation of air mobility platforms.
In London, the KC-135 Stratotanker demonstrated that nearly seven decades of service does not stop engineering vision and ongoing modernization from maintaining a legacy aircraft not only ready for mission, but also able to thrill crowds alongside the world’s most sophisticated fighters.
