Might the next home cinema jump not be a brighter screen, but rather a smarter control over every pixel and frame? Dolby Vision 2, debuting at IFA 2025, proposes just that moving the emphasis away from in-TV post-processing and towards an end-to-end mastering-to-display pipeline where it is film directors, not TV firmware, who decide the final image.
Central to this revolution is Dolby’s new bi-directional tone mapping. Conventional HDR tone mapping has been a one-way process, dynamic-range compressing a master to accommodate the capabilities of a consumer television. Dolby Vision had already improved on that by optimizing output to each TV’s measured luminance and color gamut. The new method is more: it enables authors to specify how their work should be transformed not just for less capable panels, but for displays exceeding the reference monitor’s brightness and color volume. This is highly relevant for top-end RGB miniLED sets, whose maximum luminance can reach over 2,000 nits and whose gamut is far beyond DCI-P3. As Dolby describes, bi-directional tone mapping… works in conjunction with all the features of Content Intelligence to deliver the most spellbinding and authentic image experience based on the content and your device.
Content Intelligence, the AI-based engine at the foundation of Dolby Vision 2, is not consumer-side “enhancement” filters. Rather, it helps studio professionals master. It incorporates reference light data from the grading suite to allow Precision Black to dynamically adjust shadow detail in response to the TV’s panel properties and the viewer’s ambient lighting. Combined with Light Sense, which employs sophisticated sensors to quantify real-time room light, the solution can eliminate the long-standing issue that HDR too frequently is “too dark” in light environments without collapsing contrast or compromising the director’s vision.
For gaming and sports, Dolby Vision 2 offers optimization tools that dynamically adjust white point and motion control to keep high-speed material clear without the overbearing smoothing that dismays film purists. These are content-encoded adjustments, so the TV is responding to creative direction instead of generic motion algorithms.
The most fascinating addition for content creators is probably Authentic Motion, available only on the Dolby Vision 2 Max tier. It is a creative-led motion grading tool that processes shot-by-shot, eliminating judder and blur without introducing the “soap opera effect.” The idea takes inspiration from TrueCut Motion, applied in shows such as Avatar: The Way of Water, where selectively mixed high frame rate capture (48fps) with the conventional 24fps look. By providing exact control over when and where motion smoothing is used like during sustained pans or convoluted 3D sequences Authentic Motion recognizes the engineering dilemma introduced by current HDR: brighter, quicker displays exaggerate judder that was tolerable on slower, dimmer cinema projectors.
It is not a small issue. As Pixelworks’ Richard Miller has pointed out, HDR’s added brightness can increase perceived judder to three times that of SDR, and normal 1/48-second shutter speeds can feel artificially staccato at 4K HDR. High frame rate by itself can fix motion clarity but threatens to shatter cinematic illusion. Motion grading, be it through TrueCut or Dolby’s new system, provides a compromise maintaining the storytelling texture of film while taking advantage of the technical headroom of modern displays.
Dolby Vision 2’s design also embodies a tiered approach. The mass-market version addresses average TVs, providing essential upgrades via the new Dolby Image Engine and AI-driven mastering information. Dolby Vision 2 Max, for top models, enables the entire set: bi-directional tone mapping, Authentic Motion, and sophisticated calibration features for experts. Both levels are backward compatible with current Dolby Vision content, yet only fresh hardware Hisense’s forthcoming MediaTek Pentonic 800-based models are the first to get it is capable of decoding the extended metadata.
The rollout will be phased. On the content front, Canal+ is the initial partner to embrace Dolby Vision 2 mastering for movies, series, and live sports. At present, the technology’s potential exists as much in its philosophy as its specs: that the future of HDR has nothing to do with TVs making an educated guess about what a scene should look like but with presenting absolutely what the creator intended, no matter the viewing environment, on any that can display it.
