F‑22 ‘Super’ Upgrade Brings Hypersonics, AI, and 24‑Hour Global Strike

The F‑22 Raptor’s next book will not be a new airframes coming off an assembly line, but rather in a far-reaching modernization that converts the already potent stealth fighter into what Pentagon planners are referring to as the “F‑22 Super.” The improvements aim to keep the plane dominant into the 2050s, using new weapons, sensors, and networking capabilities to maintain its central tenet of “first‑shot, first‑kill” in a period of rapidly accelerating threats.

It is centered on the incorporation of the AIM‑260 Joint Advanced Tactical Missile (JATM) and MAKO air‑launched hypersonic missile. The AIM‑260, which was created to address long‑range systems such as China’s PL‑15, provides increased range and the capacity to attack targets at standoff distances while in flight. The MAKO adds hypersonic strike capability to the Raptor, allowing it to provide precision effects at speeds greater than Mach 5, squeezing out adversary reaction times to seconds. Both will be coupled with software and fire‑control enhancements that enable speedy targeting and engagement even in contested electromagnetic environments.

In addition to kinetic firepower, the F‑22 Super is being re‑engineered as a data node in the Air Force’s growing combat cloud. Pilots have long referred to the Raptor as an “aerial quarterback,” but breakthroughs like Project Hydra have made the metaphor literal. During Hydra’s demonstration, F‑22s and F‑35As shared sensor tracks in mid-air for the first time, with a U‑2S Dragon Lady aircraft carrying an “Einstein Box” mission computer to mediate between their incompatible stealth datalinks. The portal also fed targeting information to ground guns and naval units in near‑real time, compressing the “data‑to‑decision” time from minutes to seconds. In the F‑22 Super, AI‑equipped sensors and open‑architecture avionics will integrate this type of cross‑platform fusion directly into the aircraft to enable effortless, low‑probability‑of‑intercept communications with the F‑35, next‑generation F‑47 NGAD fighter, and 4th‑gen aircraft over hardened links.

Survivability improvements are just as ambitious. The FY 2026 budget of the Air Force contains a new Infrared Defensive System (IRDS) to replace the AN/AAR‑56 missile launch detector to enhance long‑range detection of air‑to‑air and surface‑to‑air threats. When used with a podded infrared search‑and‑track (IRST) sensor, the Raptor will have the added benefit of passive detection, immune to jamming and effective against stealthy targets. Networked IRSTs on several aircraft can instantly triangulate targets, delivering engagement‑quality tracks without radiating radar energy. Stealth enhancements, such as low‑observable signature control and possible infrared suppression, will also make targeting by the enemy more difficult.

Range and endurance are being met with stealth‑friendly Low Drag Tanks and Pylons (LDTP), designed for supersonic speed with little radar penalty. These pylons employ smart pneumatic racks to manage ejection forces with accuracy, minimizing drag when stores are not present. Together with the Raptor’s supercruise sustained Mach 1.5+ speeds without afterburners the tanks increase reach without compromising survivability.

Each of these improvements contributes to the Air Force’s Rapid Raptor concept, which operates forward‑deployed small groups and aircraft to provide global deployment within 24 hours. Practically speaking, this would allow a couple of F‑22 Supers and a C‑17 support plane to lift off from the continental United States and enter combat in any theater in one day, equipped with hypersonics, long‑range air‑to‑air missiles, and an instant link to the joint force.

The modernization also looks ahead to the requirements of electromagnetic warfare. AI‑based electronic support measures will detect and prioritize signals to jam or spoof, while direction, low‑probability‑of‑detection emissions defend the jet’s own communications. These are capabilities that are being developed for the F‑47 NGAD, emphasizing the Air Force’s vision of a “family of systems” that sees manned fighters, drones, and command centers as having a common operational picture.

In the disputed skies of the 2030s and beyond where enemies deploy next‑generation stealth fighters, long‑range missiles, and networked air defenses the F‑22 Super is being constructed to look first, shoot first, and live to fight another day. Its combining of hypersonic attack, sensor network, and quick deployment is less an individual bound ahead than a continuous sprinting, keeping the Raptor, in the words of one program official, “the most superior air dominance platform the world has ever seen.”
