Would a phone actually open to three full-length displays? Samsung’s latest Unpacked teaser has stoked that very possibility and the answer could come on September 4, just a few hours before IFA Berlin doors swing open. The company is having a virtual-only event at 5:30 a.m. ET, broadcast live worldwide on Samsung.com and YouTube, in a publicity stunt that puts it ahead of Apple’s yearly iPhone unveiling and in the media limelight of Europe’s biggest consumer electronics expo.

Although Samsung has not yet published the official agenda, event photography a cube-shaped gizmo looking to open in all directions fanned rumors of a much-hyped tri-foldable phone. Rumors about such a product have grown louder in recent months. In an earnings call, Samsung stated it aims to “lead the market by expanding our ecosystem through innovative form factors like the upcoming Tri-Fold device,” confirming that development is well past the conceptual stage. A senior executive told Android Authority, “We’ve had a tri-fold for some time, designed and everything. So it’s not a new concept to us. What we’re debating is the viability.”
Engine-wise, a tri-fold smartphone poses problems much greater than those of current book-type and clamshell foldables. Flexible OLED technology has to withstand thousands of folds without creasing visually, while having consistent brightness and color fidelity across three connected panels. Mechanical hinge structures have to be stiff enough to eliminate wobble and accurate enough to align multiple folds without breaking the display substrate. Samsung’s so-called design a 10-inch OLED screen powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite and paired with a 200-megapixel head camera would be a test of mobile component unification to an extreme. Battery repurposing, heat balancing, and software optimization for triple-screen multitasking are no cakewalk tasks.
The tri-fold concept has already appeared in prototypes from other manufacturers, such as Tecno’s Phantom Ultimate G Fold and Huawei’s Mate XT Ultimate, but Samsung’s approach would likely integrate its Galaxy AI platform. Samsung mobile R&D vice president Won-Joon Choi has confirmed future-generation AI-based features will be “very specific … optimized experiences according to those form factors,” hinting at a tri-fold introducing adaptive interface settings, context-aware multitasking, and cross-panel continuity features not yet implemented in existing foldables.
IFA’s centennial issue is an appropriate backdrop for such a declaration. The Berlin fair has grown from a radio broadcast into an innovation laboratory for products from AI-enabled home appliances to wafer-thin laptops. Samsung’s appearances there have been a gauge of its strategic focus for years, and this year AI was used more than 90 times during its press conference, highlighting the company’s determination to wed hardware innovations with smart software.
But the September Unpacked may be less about the tri-fold. The Galaxy Tab S11 series launch is rumored to include up to 16GB of RAM, AMOLED screens, and MediaTek Dimensity 9400 processors a departure from Samsung’s traditional loyalty to Qualcomm. A Galaxy S25 FE, which is slimmer than the last one and includes a 4,900mAh battery and enhanced charging speed, may also appear. These phones would join the Galaxy line of products before the holiday season, with premium and value-based choices.
It is no coincidence that the timing is so perfectly timed. By releasing new products just before IFA’s media frenzy and Apple’s keynote, Samsung gains maximum visibility in a cluttered news environment. For business observers and technophiles, the real thrill is whether the company will ultimately realize its three-pronged aspirations and, if it succeeds, whether it can produce a product that can break the durability, usability, and affordability barriers that have so far kept such designs out of mass-market consumption. Rumors put the cost at $3,000 and the initial rollout in China and South Korea, with global availability subject to market reception.
One thing is certain at this point: Samsung’s September 4 livestream will be eagerly awaited by anyone tracking the next step change in mobile form factors. Whether that step change materializes in two panels or three could make the difference in the company’s competitive edge in the next smartphone wave of innovation.
