Imagine if a rifle could equal the ballistics of a full-length carbine but be shorter than many short-barreled rifles. That is essentially the engineering challenge presented in the Springfield Hellion in .223 Remington, the civilian version of Croatia’s VHS-2 service rifle. Designed by HS Produkt and brought to the US market by Springfield Armory, the Hellion takes advantage of the bullpup design moving the action and magazine back behind the trigger to provide a short, manageable platform without losing barrel length.

The Hellion’s total length is only 28.25 inches with its adjustable stock folded, though it contains a 16-inch chrome moly-vanadium barrel with 1:7 twist and Melonite treatment. This geometry relocates the center of mass to the rear, a feature whose testing left the rifle balance better and easier to swing from target to target. Weight distribution is also what prevents muzzle climb, a feature that was seen in military tests of the VHS-2. The short-stroke gas piston system, optimized for either “normal” or “suppressed” use, keeps fouling out of the action and provides predictable cycling across conditions.
Ambidexterity is a fundamental design tenet. The Hellion boasts symmetrical safety selectors, a non-reciprocating charging handle deployable from either side, and a reversible ejection system. Transference to left-side ejection involves no tools just a rapid field stripping and rotation of the bolt and is one of the only rifles that can be set up for genuine left-handed firing without swapping out major groups. Two ejection ports are covered by spring-activated covers, and the cheekpiece has brass deflectors on each side to prevent the shooter’s face from being hit.
Control layout combines familiar and innovative features. The BCM Gunfighter Mod 3 pistol grip is AR-compatible, and the magazine well will take standard STANAG magazines. The magazine release is a paddle behind the mag well, with the bolt release behind that. Operators familiar with AR-pattern rifles might take some time to get used to; as one reviewer noted, “you will inevitably end up missing or confusing [the bolt release] with the magazine release at first.” There is no bolt catch lever on the outside, so manually locking the bolt open requires reaching into the mag well to activate the internal hold-open serviceable but less quick than AR ergonomics.
Material engineering has a strong influence on the Hellion’s feel. The polymer receiver minimizes felt recoil and adds durability while maintaining weight at around eight pounds. There are extensive M-LOK slots at 3, 6, and 9 o’clock for accessory mounting, and a full-length Picatinny rail with built-in flip-up sights accommodates optics and iron sight usage. The iron sights themselves are a highlight: completely shielded, finger-adjustable windage and elevation, with a rear aperture drum graduated for 100 to 500 meters in SS109/M855 ballistics.
On the range, the Hellion performed better than expected for a bullpup. Test groups at 100 yards consistently came in or threatened the 1-MOA limit with match-grade ammunition, including Speer’s 75-grain Gold Dot averaging 0.8 inches at 2,508 fps. Despite economical steel-cased ammunition, accuracy was still functional. Recoil was defined as a “direct push to the rear,” supporting quick follow-up shots. At longer ranges up to 700 yards shooters had consistent hits using holdovers in a 1-8x scope, though the slightly mushy break of the long trigger linkage became more noticeable at range.
The Hellion’s trigger is surprisingly sophisticated for a bullpup. Though the measured pull weight averaged 7 lbs. 5 oz., several testers noted that it felt lighter in function, having a smooth take-up, defined wall, and clean break. This is a commendable feat considering the mechanical sophistication involved in transposing trigger motion to a rearward action through linkages, a typical weakness in bullpup designs.
Historically, bullpup rifles have encountered resistance in the US market as being prone to awkward reloads and unintuitive controls. The Hellion inherits some of these constraints its manual of arms is more akin to a G36 or an AK rather than an AR but makes up for it with contemporary ergonomics, full ambidexterity, and combat-proven reliability. According to one military small arms historian, the VHS-2 platform achieved a 50,000-round endurance test with minor part failures, highlighting its resilience.
For shooters who want a short 5.56mm with the ballistically extended reach of a full-size barrel, the Hellion is a technically advanced alternative to traditional carbines. Its use of polymer engineering, flexible ejection, and accurate manufacturing is indicative of how bullpup design has moved from an experiment that only appealed to a few to a service and sporting platform that is highly viable.
