Why the F‑15 Eagle Still Rules America’s Skies at Mach 2.5

“104 to zero.” That is the F‑15 Eagle’s air-to-air combat tally a score no fighter ever has or will match. With stealth planes and hypersonic test aircraft, this fourth-generation aircraft, first flown in 1972, remains the fastest combat aircraft in the U.S. military, with a top speed of Mach 2.5, or roughly 1,650 mph. Its longevity is no accident; it is the product of engineering compromises that sacrificed raw speed, maneuverability, and payload capacity in favor of continuing modernization.

The Eagle is powered by its twin Pratt & Whitney F100 turbofan engines, each of which delivers as much as 29,000 pounds of thrust with afterburner. This more than 1:1 thrust-to-weight ratio, especially when fully loaded to maximum weight, allows the aircraft to perform a vertical acceleration an advantage that gave it an advantage over earlier combat planes. Its afterburner, which injects fuel directly into the exhaust stream to produce a heart-stopping boost in thrust, is the cause of both its blistering top speed and its notorious thirst for fuel. As former F‑16 and F‑35 pilot Justin “Hasard” Lee described supersonic flight in writing, I remember flying in an F‑16 in afterburner while supersonic… and looking down to see a fuel‑flow rate of over 50,000 lbs per hour… a twin‑engine jet such as the F‑15 or F‑22 can double that. For the Eagle, that means reserving its high‑speed dash capability for when it most counts.

The aerodynamic configuration of the aircraft is also enhanced by its powerplant. Low wing loading and high thrust-to-weight ratio enable it to turn tightly without slowing down, a valuable asset in dogfighting. Its nose-mounted radar, one of the first capable of detecting multiple targets at distances up to 100 miles, allows pilots to attack foes before they can detect them. This capability was complemented by developing missile technology: early AIM‑7 Sparrows were upgraded to the AIM‑120 AMRAAM, and beyond‑visual‑range kills became the signature of modern air combat.

The F‑15E Strike Eagle variant introduced deep‑strike ground attack capability to the aircraft’s mission set, with equipment like the APG‑70 radar and the LANTIRN navigation and targeting pods offering low‑altitude, all‑weather capability. The conformal fuel tanks on the Strike Eagle, which encircle the fuselage to reduce drag, permit it to fly 2,400 miles with external tanks yet retain a significant weapons load. The rear cockpit weapon systems officer operates radar, electronic warfare, and targeting displays, freeing the pilot to focus on flight and threat maneuvering.

The modern F‑15EX Eagle II follows this tradition with improved avionics, a fly‑by‑wire system, and the Eagle Passive/Active Warning and Survivability System (EPAWSS). Delivered to front‑line squadrons in January 2025, EPAWSS brings Cold War‑generation countermeasures to a package that automatically detects, identifies, and jams nascent threat radars. Brig. Gen. Jason Voorheis described it as “vital to our 21st century fighter force structure… an incredible deterrent in our Great Power Competition initiative.” Its design accommodates constant software updates, which guarantees flexibility against changing threats.

Though experimental aircraft like the X‑15, which flew at Mach 6.72, and the pilotless X‑43, which went Mach 9.6, have flown faster, they were test models, not fighters capable of combat. Even the recently retired SR‑71 Blackbird, with a speed of Mach 3.4, was a reconnaissance airplane without an air‑to‑air combat role. The F‑15’s speed, therefore, remains unparalleled among production U.S. fighter jets, a feat it has sustained for decades.

The selection in the 1980s of the F‑15E over more advanced variants like the F‑16XL was driven in part by survivability two engines offered a greater chance of returning from deep strike missions on fire and economics. But the versatility of the Eagle has proven that choice justified. From its early air‑superiority role through today’s multi‑role, networked battlefield, its fundamental design has absorbed new sensors, weapons, and electronic warfare equipment without sacrificing the performance which made it a legend.

With the F‑15EX, the Air Force has ensured that its most powerful fighter on active duty will not only be an anachronism of bygone days, but a front-line weapon capable of standing head-on to current challenges still rising, still building up speed, and still unvanquished.
