Between 1996 and 1999, an unconventional aircraft occupied the skies that would test the limits of stealth technology while keeping an eye on the purse strings of its developers. The Boeing Bird of Prey, a one-seat stealth technology demonstrator, made 38 test flights that would have an impact on the next generation of aircraft design, and yet its flights and very existence were shrouded in secrecy for years. Today, we take a look at the intriguing history of this secret project and its legacy.

The Bird of Prey development process started in 1992 when McDonnell-Douglas, with their military contracts stalled, ventured forth with an intent to improve their stealth technology. It was a program that was set to not only showcase technological development but also economical thriftiness. Inspired by a Klingon spaceship from the celebrated Star Trek series, the Bird of Prey would be a precursor to new stealth technology methods that revolutionized the design of aircraft.
At the core of Bird of Prey design was the principle of “low observability.” This aircraft took radar cross-section minimizing to an extreme, using creative methods like burrowing the engine deep in the fuselage to conceal infrared signatures and applying thoughtfully designed shading on the paint to visually camouflage the true shapes of the fuselage in daylight. The project showed outstanding stealth characteristics, including “gapless” control surfaces that blended together with the wings and an engine air intake hidden from the forward view, all designed to minimize radar visibility.
Its cost-effectiveness was possibly one of the Bird of Prey’s most impressive features. With the whole program allegedly costing just $67 million, engineers made use of off-the-shelf parts and hand-control systems instead of more costly computerized systems. The landing gear came from Beech King Air and Queen Air planes, and the control system was completely manual without computers. The plane was equipped with a Pratt & Whitney JT15D-5C turbofan engine, which was similar to the engines found in business aircraft of that time, producing 3,190 pounds of thrust.
In terms of performance, the Bird of Prey was not built to break any speed records. Its operational speed was reported to be 260 knots with a maximum altitude of 20,000 feet. The focus was squarely on stealth rather than aerodynamics. Despite its modest flying capabilities, the Bird of Prey proved invaluable in validating new manufacturing techniques such as using large single-piece composite structures, “virtual reality” computerized design and assembly, and disposable tooling.
Boeing, having purchased McDonnell-Douglas in 1998, subsequently used the Bird of Prey’s innovative design methods in its X-32 Joint Strike Fighter demonstrators and X-45A Unmanned Combat Air Vehicle prototype. Once secrecy was removed in 2002, Boeing donated the plane freely to the National Museum of the United States Air Force in Dayton, Ohio.
