Could it be that the most powerful illusion concerning our world is one we have constructed ourselves so strong that it can be viewed from hundreds of kilometers in altitude? Ex-NASA astronaut Ronald Garan, having spent 178 days in orbit around Earth, describes an experience that destroyed his long-standing assumptions about the oneness of the planet. “I’ve always said that you can’t see borders from space, apparently I was wrong,” Garan said, remembering how he was amazed to see a brilliant orange line twisting its way through Asia. VIIRS offers sub-kilometer spatial resolution and high dynamic range, allowing scientists to distinguish between stable urban lights, temporary phenomena like fires or festivals, and the persistent glow of security infrastructure. The India-Pakistan border’s visibility is not an artifact of the imaging process, but a direct result of continuous, powerful lighting installed for security and surveillance.
For astronauts like Garan, such sights catalyze what psychologists and space scientists term the “overview effect.” This phenomenon, first described in the late 20th century, refers to the profound psychological shift experienced when viewing Earth from orbit. NASA describes it as the impact of looking down at the Earth from above, and how it can create a shift in the way astronauts view and think about our planet and life itself. Garan himself describes this change in words as follows: “We keep trying to deal with issues such as global warming, deforestation [and] biodiversity loss as stand-alone issues when in reality they’re just symptoms of the underlying root problem and the problem is, that we don’t see ourselves as planetary.”
The overview effect is not just figurative. Studies have established that astronauts tend to come back with increased empathy, environmental concern, and a sense of interconnectedness. A 2020 study discovered that the Earth was viewed as a beautiful, fragile object to be treasured, and changes in this perception significantly correlated with a statement that suggested that the respondents became involved in environmental causes after returning home. The experience is said to be awe-inspiring, usually accompanied by a sense of self-transcendence where individual boundaries are shed in favor of an planetary vision.
Garan’s sensory memories bring this effect to life.
